Surrounded by the loving presence of her husband, mother and brothers, Shannon Munson Milder, 46, died May 18, 2025.

Shannon will be missed by her husband, Brett Arp, and the Milder family, mother, Phyllis, her brothers Edmund (Juliette), Eugene (Joanna), Robert (Maria); nephews James, Thomas and William; and nieces Maria, Josephine, Shannon, Patricia and Lauren. She was preceded in death by her father, James E. Milder.

Shannon will also be missed by the Arp family; mother, Susan, father, Bennie, brother Ken (Camelia) and nieces Madison and Montana. In addition, by aunts, uncles, and cousins and the many friends she made over the years.

Shannon was always a beautiful, vibrant young girl, the "Princess"among three brothers. At a young age, she enjoyed ballet and tap dancing when her family lived in Doha, Qatar. During this time, she walked the Great Wall of China, dodged monkeys in Kenya, visited the Sistine Chapel, climbed among the ruins in Greece, ascended the Eiffel Tower and the Leaning Tower of Pisa, and explored inside the pyramids of Giza. Named after the River Shannon, she leaned backward and kissed the Blarney Stone.

Later she excelled in basketball, playing in elementary and high school and on AAU teams in the summer. Shannon graduated from Bayley-Ellard High School in 1996.

As a freshman at the University of Scranton, Shannon walked onto the Lady Royals basketball team, earning her role as the starting center. Three of the four years she played, the Lady Royals made it to the Final Four. Shannon graduated with a BS in 2000.

She joined the US Navy after graduation, completing Officer Candidate School in Pensacola, FL. Her years of military service, rising to the rank of Lieutenant, brought her great pride and happiness. She served as an Aviation Maintenance Duty Officer and deployed on the Aircraft Carrier USS John C. Stennis. Shannon was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal for superior performance of duties, and she represented her branch of service on the All-Navy women's basketball team.

After leaving active duty, Shannon received her MS from Villanova University in 2007. She began working as a civilian for the Navy. Shannon was a Site Manager and Education Facilitator in San Diego, School Liaison Officer, Child and Youth Program Manager, Veteran Transition Special Project Manager, Outreach Coordinator and Chief of Staff for the DoD 2017 Warriors Games, and finally, at the Pentagon, as Congressional Communications Staff Advisor to the Deputy Chief of Naval Operations, Shore Readiness Division.

Shannon married Brett Arp, January 4, 2020, at a beautiful wedding ceremony in Washington, DC. They lived in DC, then Richmond, VA, and finally in Knoxville, TN. They enjoyed Nationals baseball, Tennessee basketball and football, Notre Dame football, and, above all, the Kansas City Chiefs. Their dog, Patrick, named after the Chiefs' quarterback, was a great source of joy, always carrying a stick in his mouth on their many neighborhood walks.

Shannon will always be remembered for her constant care and attention to others, her loving spirit, her generous nature, her intelligence, her athleticism, and her strength and grit. She is missed so deeply by all who knew and loved her.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Shannon Milder Endowed Scholarship at the University of Scranton, 800 Linden Street, Scranton, PA, 18510, or online at www.scranton.edu/makeagift, designated for the Shannon Milder scholarship. Arrangements are under the care of the Featheringill Mortuary in San Diego, CA.

Growing up, my best friend was Shannon´s younger brother, Robert. I was around her enough to know that she was a person who can smile with her voice and her eyes. Shannon has an unforgettable energy.

I was blessed to work with Shannon at Navy Region Southwest for many years..and honored she asked me to help her when she was Chief of Staff for the DoD Warrior Games. Shannon was such a beautiful soul and made everyone feel welcome with her warm and fun personality .... She easily made friends with everyone. She had it all - Intelligience, Beauty, Humility and always able to laugh at herself and make others laugh. I miss you my friend and praying for your beautiful angelic soul and your beautiful family who you loved so much.

Shannon was a strong, vibrant, fierce and loving friend, and a committed lifelong servant leader. I learned so much from her, and I feel lucky to have known her as a friend and colleague.

So sad to hear this...I was stationed with her in Willow Grove Pa...She was a young Lieutenant and we worked in the Aviation Maintenance Department. Shannon always had a smile on her face,...and would come into my office from time to time to just chat. God speed to her and condolences to her family. Hand salute Lt.

I have so many memories of Shannon during our time together in Colorado. I liked her the moment I met her at work. Our dogs, George and Guinness, ended up being best buddies.
Of all the fun times going to yoga, taking hikes, and laughing together at one of her many quips, my favorite was our road trip to move her from Colorado Springs to San Diego. I´m so thankful for the times we had together and I´m so sad that none of us will get to laugh with her again.

So sorry to hear this news. I had the pleasure of coaching Shannon as a Lady Royal at the University of Scranton. She was an outstanding person and total team player who was a major reason for our success.
I am still at a loss for words, but I loved her and liked her. Obviously taken way too soon, I hope she RIP.

I am so blessed to have had Shannon as one of my best friends for almost thirty years. We met the first day of college as randomly assigned roommates. She was hilarious, outgoing and could make friends with anyone. I was shy and she took me under her wing, and we became inseparable. We´ve shared all the major and mundane life events with each other almost daily in the years since and I´ll miss her forever. She was selfless, always wanting the focus to be on others. She loved her family and friends intensely. Brett, Mrs. Milder, Ed, Gene, Robert and your families- she adored you and I´m sending you all my love and sympathies.

I worked with Shannon in the Fleet and Family Support Center in San Diego. Shannon was much loved by her people, advocated for the welfare of military members and their families, and passionately worked to make our world a better place. I count myself among those who love her dearly.
