Shari Baker Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 15, 2025.
Shari Anne Baker passed away peacefully on June 19th in Happy Valley, Oregon, after an extended illness. Born on March 24, 1943, in Rochester, New York. Raised in Hudson, Wisconsin, Shari attended Hudson High School, where she first revealed the "star quality" she inherited from her father-a born entertainer. She once starred in a school play where she shared a memorable onstage kiss with the male lead-who later became her boyfriend. As she often joked, "It must have been some kiss!"

In 1959, Shari was selected as the American Field Service (AFS) exchange student from Hudson and spent a formative summer in Northern Italy. She learned Italian during the boat journey overseas and formed a lasting bond with her host family-returning to visit them in 1974 with her own children.

Following high school, Shari moved to Seattle and became a flight attendant with United Airlines. During this time, she met Robert Baker. The two married in September 4, 1965 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Seattle, and together they traveled the world through Bob's Army service before settling in Crofton, Maryland, where they raised their two children. After their divorce in 1974, Shari completed her undergraduate degree at Bowie State University and later moved to California. There, she began a new chapter, earning a Master's degree in Social Work from San Francisco State University and embarking on a fulfilling career as a social worker.

Shari had a deep love of books, movies, gardening, and road trips to Yosemite. She was also an avid and eclectic collector-of dolls, rocks, and above all, people in need. With an extraordinary intuition for others' pain and potential, she was the first to offer encouragement, always pointing out the best in those around her. She volunteered with several causes close to her heart, including Suicide Prevention and CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates for Children).

She is survived by her children: Joseph Baker of Petaluma and Kecia (John) Steddin of Novato; her grandchildren: Anika (Collin) Miller, Danny Baker, Elizabeth, Sophia, and Kurt Steddin; and great-grandchildren: Davis and Kelia Miller. She is also survived by her sister Diane (Tom) Everson; nephews Scott (Jill) Everson and Paul (Michelle) Everson; niece Roxy (Gerry) Webster; seven grand-nephews (including Alex, deceased); one grand-niece and one great-grand-niece.

Shari was preceded in death by her parents, her stillborn daughter Darcy, and numerous beloved pets whom we hope were waiting joyfully to greet her.

In accordance with her wishes, Shari's ashes will be privately scattered by her family. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory can be made to the Mental Health Society of San Francisco (MHSSF).

Saying goodbye to you has been one of the hardest things I´ve ever had to do - not just because you´re gone, but because our relationship was never simple. We loved each other, sometimes imperfectly, but deeply. Even through the hard moments, your presence shaped me in ways I´m still learning to understand.
