Sharon Barrows Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Oct. 4 to Oct. 8, 2014.
HAMPDEN - On September 29, 2014, heaven opened up and received the beautiful, smiling angel Sharon Marie Barrows, 64, of Hampden, Maine. Sharon was born on December 27, 1949, and grew up in West Seneca, New York. Sharon dedicated her life to caring for family, friends, and the less fortunate. She also faced every challenging circumstance with a dignity and grace that was inspiring to those around her. She truly loved life, especially the simple moments, like being with those she loved. Her favorite role was that of mother to her two daughters. She was a loyal employee on the EMMC campus for over 30 years. In addition, she worked weekends at the Howard Johnson's restaurant for 20 years. In her free time, Sharon enjoyed reading, quilting, knitting, crocheting, beading, sewing, crafting, gardening, tending to birds, completing charitable projects, traveling, yoga and meditation, appreciating art, attending musicals and plays, preparing and eating good food, and spending time with her family and friends. Sharon was wholeheartedly committed to raising two healthy, strong daughters. Sharon loved being a Girl Scout leader when her girls were young. Throughout the years, she served as taxi driver for her daughters' numerous dance lessons, concerts, sporting events, etc ... Sharon used her special talents to make her daughters' clothing, dance recital costumes, prom dresses, and so many other special gifts. She also is known for getting great pleasure out of making beautiful gifts, such as jewelry, quilts, Christmas ornaments, etc ... and giving away those gifts to friends and family. Sharon has truly left behind a legacy of giving, to loved ones, as well as to people she never knew through her charitable giving. She enjoyed the memorable road trips she took with her dear, loving friends. In addition, she was active with numerous charitable and civic organizations. Sharon's infectious smile, sweet spirit, and courage touched all of those her knew her.

Sharon was predeceased by her parents, Edward and Dorothy; and her loving sister, Darlene. Sharon is survived by her husband, Jim of Hampden, Maine; loving and adoring daughters, Shannon of Scarborough, Maine, and Patti of Tampa, Florida; and brothers, Dennis of Syracuse, New York, and Mark of Kenneth City, Florida.

Sharon's family and friends eagerly invite and welcome all those who knew and cared about her to attend a celebration of her life on Saturday, October 11, 2014, from 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.-ish at the Penobscot Valley Country Club at 366 Main St. in Orono, Maine. Sharon will be honored with words, music, hors d'oeuvres and a few of her favorite things. We look forward to sharing beautiful memories that will provide us all comfort and joy. Certainly, Sharon's loving spirit wants us all to experience comfort and joy at this time. The evening will commence with a fireworks display, one of Sharon's many favorite things. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to any of Sharon's favorite causes, including feeding the less fortunate by donating to any charity that works to eradicate hunger or the local charity Furry Friends Food Bank at the Eastern Area Agency on Aging. Sharon believed all beings deserved to be free of hunger. Sharon is immensely loved and will be dearly missed.

There are many times throughout the year that I think about my kind, compassionate and creative sister in law, Sharon. Right now her gardens would still be spectacular and she would getting out her fall decorations. I’m getting ready to hack away at the bittersweet because it’s choking my trees.....nasty stuff. Not Sharon, she would be meticulously removing it and using it in her floral arrangements. I love her, I miss her and our family has paid a tremendous price to cancer. A tribute to Sharon: Be kind, try to be healthier than you are today and help a child in need. Love, Tami

Patti, Shannon, and Jim... It was truly an honor to be able to deliver Patti's commemorative words at Sharon's beautiful celebration. Her creative, loving, and giving spirit was obvious even before I had ever met her and was truly glorified during her celebration. She has left me inspired to be live life in a more meaningful way and to strive to create a similar mother-daughter bond with my own daughter. Love and condolences, Nicole, Victoria, and Jaggers Keene

Patti,
Your mom was indeed so extraordinary and so special. Why these angels need to go home sooner than others, we may never know. I pray the pain of your loss is not debilitating forever. Grieve and grieve hard, but honor her memory by living your life well, by letting time heal your heart. Let her legacy be that she showered you with enough love and strength by example so that you can survive and find joy again. This is what I pray for you constantly.
Love from my family to you and yours,

We are deeply saddened by the loss of Sharon and our hearts go out to Jim, Shannon and Patti, her entire family and all her friends. A woman full of spirit and life, who faced unbelievable challenges with dignity, grace and always a smile. She touched us in so many ways. We love you, Sharon, and will miss you deeply. The St. Francis Prayer describes you and the way you lived:
Lord, make me a channel of thy peace,
that where there is hatred, I may bring love; that where there is wrong, I may bring the spirit of forgiveness; that where there is discord, I may bring harmony; that where there is error, I may bring truth; that where there is doubt, I may bring faith; that where there is despair, I may bring hope; that where there are shadows, I may bring light; that where there is sadness, I may bring joy.
Lord, grant that I may seek rather than to comfort that to be comforted; to understand, than to be understood, to love, than to loved. For it is by self-forgetting that one finds; It is by forgiving that one is forgiven. It is by dying that one awakens to Eternal Live. Amen
We love you.

To the family of dear kind hearted Sharon, she will truly be missed. I had the pleasure of getting to know her, but she will be remembered the most for the kindness she showed to my family when my brother was suddenly taken off this earth and left behind a baby girl (Jayla ). Sharon made her the most beautiful quilt with all of his favorite clothing so that his memory would live on forever., not to mention other beautiful gifts she made for my family in his honor. My deepest sympathy to her family because we definitely have lost an angel.
