Sharon Riggs Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jul. 6 to Jul. 7, 2007.
Sharon Kay Riggs 8/12/1942~7/3/2007 Our beautiful wife and mother, Sharon Kay Riggs, passed away peacefully at home, on July 3, 2007, with her husband, Larry by her side. Sharon was born in Caldwell, Idaho to Warren and Margaret Durham on August 12, 1942. She attended Caldwell High School, where she met her love and soul mate, Larry Riggs. After High School, she attended Nampa Business College and the College of Idaho. Larry and Sharon were married on December 28, 1961. After living in various parts of the Pacific Northwest, the family moved to Midvale, Utah in 1973. Sharon went to work for John Wiley & Sons, a college text book company, as a customer service representative. When the company closed in 1988, she began working at the Salt Lake Community College Bookstore as the textbook buyer, where she worked until the time of her passing. Sharon truly enjoyed life; she was an avid golfer(hole in one, May 11, 1992, Forest Dale Golf Course), bowler, and traveler. She and Larry were always planning a trip, going on one, or just getting back. In the summer, a lot of time was spent at Defa's Ranch in Tabiona, Utah. Sharon was a volunteer for the 2002 Olympics, where she was able to meet one of her idols, Peggy Fleming. She was a member of Beta Sigma Phi, where she formed many valuable and lasting friendships. She is survived by her husband; son, Richard (David Thompson) of Green River, UT, daughter, Shauna (Scott) Cohen of Spokane, WA; brother, Neal (Kayleen) Durham of Caldwell, brother, Randall (Debbie) Durham of Mesa, AZ; and grandchildren, Rachael and Zachary Cohen. She is preceded in death by her parents and her oldest brother, Richard. The family would like to thank Dr. Susan Buys and Janet Block, P.A. of the Huntsman Cancer Institute, and Community Nursing Services (and their wonderful staff) for the care and love they showed Mom in these last few months. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Huntsman Cancer Institute or Community Nursing Services in Sharon's name. Funeral service for Sharon will be held on Monday, July 9, 2007, at 10:00 AM, at Larkin Sunset Gardens Chapel, 1950 East 10600 South, Sandy, UT where family and friends and are invited to attend a visitation on Sunday evening from 6-8 PM and on Monday morning from 9-10 AM prior to the services. Interment: Larkin Sunset Gardens.

I have known Sharon and Larry for approx 40 years and over the years have shared many great times and lots of memories. We shared a love of our bassett hounds and talking, laughing and always catching up on each others lives. Sharon was a very unique, fun loving and always there friend. We were going to celebrate our birthdays in August as we turned the big "65" I will have a heavy heart but Sharon will be with me in spirit. My prayers are with all of you Larry, Shawna, Richard, Rachael and Zachary,

Sharon will forever be my knitting buddy who told me once that life is too short to knit with cheap yarn. I will think of her with every scane of yarn I touch.

Sharon arrived with a zest for family during our Durham reunions and left us with the joy and laughter that she shared. We received glimpses of her and yet each of us were filled with love. Thank you Larry for the times you came with her.

My deepest sympathy and love goes to Sharon's family. She definatly made her mark on this earth, we that know her are blessed and are better because of her influence, her smile and her charity. She was such an inspiration to us all here at Salt Lake Community College. I personally enjoyed working with her, she helped me so much. I will miss her sweet spirit and laugh...She will be missed.

Sharon,
What an example you have been to so many at Salt Lake Community College for your dedication to your work and students. What a great lady! How you shined as beacon for all to learn about work ethic. You have been missed at SLCC while you graciously endured the trial of ill health. God bless your family at this difficult time.

I am going to miss one of my dearest aunts. She was so very important to me. I loved talking to her and hearing her praise and rejoicing in my life and gaining knowledge through her. Even in her last months of life she was so willing to give of herself when it came to my circumstances. It shows just how wonderful she really was. She will be loved always and missed forever.

While I was never fortunate enough to meet Sharon personally, I felt like I knew her through my friendship with her son Richard. She had to have been an exceptional woman to have raised such a man. I admired how she loved, and encouraged both her children and delighted in their diversity. My condolences to the entire family
