Sheila McKenney Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 20, 2025.
Sheila Mary McKenney, 61, passed away on August 17, 2025, in Nesbit, Mississippi. Born on September 16, 1963, in Syracuse, New York, Sheila's life was marked by her deep compassion for animals and her enduring connections with family and friends across the country.

Sheila grew up in the Fayetteville-Manlius area of New York and graduated from Manlius Pebble Hill School. Her early years laid the foundation for a lifelong dedication to animal care and advocacy. She pursued a career as a veterinary technician, working at various animal hospitals throughout New York, Florida, and Mississippi. Her gentle nature and intuitive understanding of animals earned her the trust of both pets and their owners alike.

Sheila's bond with animals was extraordinary. She shared a particularly special connection with her beloved horse, Delta Dawn, whom she trained extensively. Their partnership was a testament to Sheila's patience and devotion. In nearly every photograph of Sheila, an animal can be seen by her side-an ever-present reminder of the love she gave so freely to creatures great and small.

Sheila is survived by her siblings: Maria Reals; John McKenney (Lisa); Sally Carter (Zane); Dan McKenney (Barb); Beth McKenney; Bob McKenney (Liz); Carol McKenney (Paul Sonricker); Luke McKenney (Penny); and Andy McKenney. She also leaves behind many cousins, nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews who will remember her warmth and kindness. In Mississippi, she found a second family in Graylin Stanford and his extended family, who became an important part of her life.

She was predeceased by her parents, William and Carmelita McKenney; and two brothers, Matthew and Mark.

Sheila's legacy lives on through the countless lives-both human and animal-that she touched with her care and compassion. May her memory bring comfort to those who knew her. A Graveside Service will be held on October 3, 2025, at 11:00 AM at Immaculate Conception Cemetery Cemetery Road. In lieu of flowers, please donate to your favorite local animal rescue in memory of Sheila.
