In addition to remembering Shelley's wonderful personal qualities she should also be remembered for her professional work. Ben Chavis and Charles Lee, principal author of the environmental justice report, “Toxic Wastes and Race” iv acknowledges the contribution of Shelley D. Hayes, ““Toxic Wastes and Race” was the first report to use rigorous analysis and methods to show how pollution and environmental hazards were disproportionately affecting minority and low-income communities.” It is considered to be “landmark report “ and ” This frequently cited work pioneered a new field of study as it demonstrated the pervasive reality of environmental racism,” It was an historic report which established public concern about environmental justice, Shelley, in related work, also was co-counsel in In re UNION CARBIDE CORPORATION GAS PLANT DISASTER AT BHOPAL, INDIA, 634 F. Supp. 842 (S.D.N.Y. 1986) .https://casetext.com/case/in-re-union-carbide-corp-gas-plant/?PHONE_NUMBER_GROUP=P

Shelley was a dear friend. One that I will not forget. When I first became aware of her battle, I was lamenting on the phone and she was the light-hearted one stating, "I look damn good", referring to her weight loss. It's hard to believe that I won't get to see that brilliant, mischievous, witty, beautiful smile again on this earth. My heart and prayers go out to her family.
Well done sister. May you reign & rest peacefully in forever Queendom.

I never knew Shelley, but I wish I did. Looks like she was a dedicated lawyer. Schenley has produced many great ones like Shelley, and like her, the school will be missed.
