My condolences to the family. My also father recently passed away, and I've been looking through his work from time to time. I found out that my father did his PhD under the supervision of Shelton. I vividly remember a lot of great stories about him while I was growing up, and he was always my father's role model, mentor, and friend throughout his professional career. I truly believe they are meeting each other at this very moment talking about physics and challenging each other for hours and hours enjoying every moment. If I can find any photos of them together I will post it her sometime soon.

To the bereaved family please accept my condolences Shelton was my thesis advisor for an ms in geophysics in the late seventies because of him I got my ms and spent a lifetime traveling the world exploring for fossil fuels. I am currently semi retired living in haifa Israel with my wife and surviving children it´s a rough neighborhood here. May this good man rest in peace

Dear Judy,
This first year without your marvelous husband has to have been challenging and hard. I´ve thought of you many times since last year.
I hope the many, many years of good memories made with him have brought you smiles and that you´ve visited the memories contained in photos many times.
Best wishes and continued condolences,
Melissa

I had the great pleasure of working with Shelton professionally for about thirty years, and have always admired how good he was at capturing important scientific issues in words, and arranging to do something to correct situations that needed correction.
He was an important member of the team of seismologists who made it possible to acquire state-of-the-art recordings (obtained worldwide) and making them available to anybody with the result that many more competent people could see relevant data.
He was a good advocate of new ways of looking at data. He was an excellent wordsmith, especially in the context of committee work that needed to be summarized in writing which captured the underlying ideas and laid out plans for next steps.
When I lose a good friend, I always think how to continue the work he started. And that is something I shall try to do in memory of my friend Shelton.

I will miss Shel. Our professional lives at Penn State faculty, HOD, etc. paralleled each other. In retirement, he was my collaborator in AESEDA to develop an educational program in earth resources for West Africa a great colleague, an invaluable collaborator and most of all, a dear friend. I admired his goals to work always for good of all and to strive for excellence in all his undertakings. I will continue to cherish my fortunate association with him.

Shel leaves a legacy from his scientific work, but equally, a legacy of kindness and good humor, and of uncommon generosity to others with the gift of his professional time and help. He was warm, and caring, and will be missed by many!
Best wishes to you, Judy, and to your daughters as you find your way forward.

Shel was a steadying hand in the Department of Geosciences at Penn State, a valuable colleague always giving freely of this time, and just the Dept Head we needed in a time of rapid change. We'll miss you Shel.
