Dr. Kaplow was an exceptionally humble man, honest, caring and unpretentious. He and I enjoyed the times spent trout fishing in Pennsylvania. I will miss him

Shep was my very first boss, he even hired me when I was pregnant with my first son, he was that impartial, fair to women, whatever you want to call it! He was so even tempered and considered each and every decision that affected the anesthesia department with such great care, with a piece of his heart. It was like the department was him and he was the department, that is how much he cared about it, and us. I was in his first group of new young hires, he was so proud of us because. of course our performance reflect not just on us, but on him.I can remember sitting in his office between cases easily talking with him about anything, he was a father of daughters, that made our relationship so comfortable.I truly cried when I had to leave St. Joes and leaving Shep was a major reason why. I was walking into a situation that had no department head and I was expected to help fill those shoes. I knew I couldn't be like Shep.It is a rare department that is lucky enough to have a man like Shep running their department. I was indeed lucky to have found a mentor in the pain clinic, especially; a friend, father figure and someone I continued to admire throughout my life.He will be missed.

I met Shep many years ago when I was visiting my aunt in Cornerbrook, Newfoundland, Canada. It was around early 1950s. He was born in Cornerbrook. I met him again at Dalhousie Univ. in Halifax where I was studying Dentistry and he was in Medicine. He was a lovely person and admired by everyone. I extend to family members my deepest sympathy.
Let his memory be a blessing for all of us.

Shep was a great friend and mentor -- and strongly influenced my decision to become an anesthesiologist. I have fond memories of the years we spent together sailing/racing on "Ciao" and his sage advice on so many topics. My thoughts and prayers go out to Barbara and the girls.

I have such fond memories of working and sailing with Shep. He was my
mentor during my first years after becoming a CRNA. I was his "spinnaker girl" as we raced on CIAO for seven years. May his memory be a blessing.

Howard and I want you to know how sorry we were to learn of Shep's passing. He was a fortunate man to have Barbara, Laura and Susan as his family and all of you were fortunate to have such a wonderful husband and father. Our thoughts and love are with all of you. Pat Goldman
