Sheridan "Sherry" Foxall Jones passed away on April 25, 2025, at her home in
Mount Holly, NJ, surrounded by everything she loved-her family, dear friends, a stellar hospice team, a sip of wine, and a live acoustic version of Van Morrison's "Brown Eyed Girl." She left this world after a long dance with respiratory illness and a life fully, fiercely lived.
Born July 26, 1936, in West Chester, Pennsylvania, Sherry graduated from the Shipley School in Philadelphia and the University of Pennsylvania. In 1958, she married architect Philip Steel, and together they raised four children in the house her parents built-right next to Sheridan Lane, a street named after her-in Roslyn, near downtown West Chester. They divorced in 1977.
Sherry briefly worked as a dental hygienist but soon followed her passion for scouting, collecting, and reselling antiques. In 1980, she married Robert "Bob" Jones, and the two became antique-dealing pros, setting up shop at the Black Angus in Adamstown, PA-where she also introduced her daughter to the world's best shoofly pie.
In the early 1990s, Sherry and Bob moved to South Bristol, Maine, where their beloved "Camp Busy Bee" became the heart of many joyful family reunions. Sherry was a master gardener with the greenest of thumbs, known especially for her award-winning rock garden and lifelong love of dahlias, lilacs, and pansies.
A fabulous baker and cook, Sherry passed on treasured recipes to the next generations: extra-rare roast beef, delicate lace cookies, and unforgettable baklava. But her favorite meal? Scrambled eggs, toast, and coffee-any time of day.
In 2018, Sherry moved to
Mount Holly, NJ, to be closer to her children and grandchildren. There, she found community and joy at Samuel Miller Senior Housing-where she played Bingo for the prizes and kept up with current events and house drama with her signature wit and warmth.
She loved dogs of every shape and size. Even after 40 years, the mere mention of Luther the greyhound could bring a tear to her eye. Baby Girl, the last of her many beloved companions, was always curled around her on the couch-all four pounds of her.
Sherry is predeceased by her parents, Judge James Foxall and Linda Haines Foxall. She is survived by her sister Mary Linda Foxhall (who fondly remembers a young Sherry walking on stilts!), her children Philip Steel, Amy Steel Pulitzer (and son-in-law Peter Pulitzer), Eric Steel, Robert Steel (and daughter-in-law Martha Seibert Steel), and her grandchildren: Emma, Charlotte, Erin, Tyler, Ben, Alex, Hunter, Dalton, and Grace. Great-grandchildren include Luca, Ames, Lyle, Ollie, and Noel.
In the end, Sherry looked forward to being reunited with her childhood dog Taffy, her beloved grandmother Nanny, and the peace of going "home."
She'll be missed at the Samuel Miller dining table and the family holiday table alike. Her spirit lives on in blooming orchids, a spring breeze, and every bloom that defies the season.
In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to Suncrest Hospice of South New Jersey, who made Sherry's final days ones of love, grace, and light. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
