Sherry Barrett Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 29, 2012.
Beryl Furet Barrett
"Sherry" Barrett died peacefully at home on Wednesday, February 29, 2012 with her family by her side. She was under the care of Hospice of the Golden Isles. She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles H. Furet and Francisca Furet de la Rocha as well as her husband of 53 years, Hugh Barrett.

Sherry was a naturalized American citizen born in an American-owned sugar plantation in the Dominican Republic in 1927. She received her high school diploma through Gordon Junior College in Barnesville, GA in 1944. She attended Wesleyan College in Macon, GA for a year and then went on to continue her studies at the Katherine Gibbs Business School in Boston, MA. She returned to the Dominican Republic in the late 1940's and worked for the US Embassy as a translator. She met and married her husband, Hugh Barrett in Santo Domingo and honeymooned at The Cloister Hotel. They loved the Golden Isles and travelled there often on vacations. From the mid 1950's until 1983, they lived in Orange, NJ and then retired to St. Simons Island.

Sherry was a devout Catholic and Eucharistic Minister at the St. William Catholic Church, Frederica. She received the Bishop Gartland Award from the Diocese of Savannah for her outstanding service to the church over a 25 year period.

Sherry also loved sports and became an accomplished golfer. In New Jersey she won the Essex Country Club Championship five times. She and her husband Hugh were active members of the Sea Island Golf Club and participated in many of the club's golf tournaments. She was named co-chairman of two women's golf championships at Sea Island and she was a long time member of the US Women's Senior Golf Association.

She is survived by her daughter Lindsay Barrett George of White Mills, PA, a grandson, William George and a granddaughter Campbell George; her brother Jack Furet of St. Simons Island, GA, four nieces and six nephews.

Sherry had an engaging personality and her interest in people was evident to all who knew her. She had an ever-present smile and encouraging word for everyone that she encountered, which made each person feel special. She brought happiness and laughter to her friends and family. Her love for her family and tender-heartedness for people extended to dogs, cats and birds. Her love of Jesus, her savior and Lord shone through her.

A Celebration of Life service will be held on Friday, March 2, 2012 at 10am at St. William Catholic Church, Frederica, followed by a reception in the Parish Hall. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Hospice of the Golden Isles, 1692 Glynco Parkway, Brunswick, GA 31525 or to the St. William Catholic Church, 2300 Frederica Road St. Simons, GA 31522.

Mrs. Barrett's arrangements have been placed into the care of Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home and Oglethorpe Crematorium. Please visit her guestbook at www.edomillerandsons.com

You will be missed Sherry. I remember your kindness to the Sea Island Cats at the Lodge. Everyday you would show with food for the stray kitties. You dedication to such a kind sharing touched my heart.
