Shimon Ash

Shimon was a dear friend, so musical and so witty - a friend since the early 1970s when he moved the Sign Centre to the Eastern Townships where I had a summer cottage. How I enjoyed time spent with him, hearing of his Zionist youth, listening to his talented singing and guitar playing and hanging out with 'hippies' and draft resisters in and around Fitch Bay and Happy Valley, in Quebec. In his later years I saw him and visited with him when he was in long-term care. I knew a visit with him would always be entertaining and full of laughter and happy memories of our younger days. These memories will always stay with me.

I spent so many weekends with Ronit, during childhood, that Shimon and Neima were my second parents. I will miss the more recent summer visits, being with Ronit and Shimon - the stories, the music and the wonderful company.

Dear Mrs. Ash and Ronit Ash:
Please accept my sincere sympathy on the passing of your husband and father.
Many a decade has passed since your husband played a pivotal role in cultural Montreal.
Who could forget the Finjan Coffee House with its charismatic owner? Or the artistic sign company known as The Sign Centre? Shimon was a renaissance man whose personality will remain memorable to all who knew him. Despite the intervening decades, Shimon will be remembered as a truly a unique individual and we are diminished by his passing.

Our condolences. We have great memories of Shimon; and somewhere we have old tapes of him singing many of his songs, like Thirsty Boots, Suzanne etc. If Ronit would like them, we could search for them.
