Shirley Dickson

DICKSON, Shirley Ann (nee Wray) July 31, 1932 - September 27, 2010 It is with great sadness that our family announces the passing of Shirley Dickson, loved wife, mother, Nana and friend on Monday, September 27, 2010. She was predeceased by her parents Gordon and Anna Wray. She will be lovingly remembered by her husband of sixty years Russell; daughters Pat and Marg (Herb) Longworth and cherished granddaughters Stephanie, Andrea and Meghan. Shirley was born and raised in Calgary and as an only child was surrounded by the love of her extended family. In 1950 she lost her mother to cancer and later that year, she married her sweetheart Russell. Two daughters followed and she devoted herself to raising them. In later life she embarked on a career and worked in oilfield accounting services and later with the University of Calgary Libraries (Main and Medical). Shirley's first love was family followed closely by her ever present passion for nature and animals (especially her many pets during her lifetime). She loved to travel and over the years holidayed in Britain, Portugal, Cuba, Hawaii and many ports of call on cruises. Everywhere she went, she acquired new friends. Shirley was also a talented knitter and many people have owned one of her pieces of handiwork. She was devoted to family, friends and co-workers. We mourn her passing but will keep her alive in our hearts and memories. In keeping with Shirley's compassion for animals, in lieu of flowers, memorial tributes may be made to the Calgary Humane Society (4455 -110 Avenue S.E., Calgary, AB T2C 2T7), the Calgary Zoological Society (1300 Zoo Road N.E., Calgary, AB T2E 7V6) or a charity of the donor's choice. A Memorial Service will be held at LEYDEN'S FUNERAL HOME (corner of 17 Avenue and 2 Street S.W., Calgary) on Sunday, October 3, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. Arrangements entrusted to LEYDEN'S FUNERAL HOME, RECEPTION & CREMATION CENTRE.
