Shirley Getty Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 25, 2025.
Shirley Getty, a celebrated Arizona artist and beloved matriarch, passed away on April 23, 2025, in San Jose, California, at the age of 101. Born on March 17, 1924, in Janesville, Wisconsin, Shirley lived a life marked by creativity, dedication, and enduring family bonds.

Shirley's artistic legacy is deeply rooted in the American Southwest. Alongside her husband Norris Getty, she created the iconic Fossil Vase-a distinctive ceramic piece that became widely recognized for its unique design and craftsmanship. Together, they produced and sold thousands of these vases, leaving an indelible mark on the regional art scene. Shirley's passion for ceramics extended beyond her own creations; she was a certified Duncan Ceramics instructor and generously shared her knowledge by teaching classes in Surprise, Arizona. Her influence as both an artist and educator enriched the lives of many aspiring ceramicists.

Before dedicating herself fully to the arts, Shirley held positions with the Parker Pen Company in her hometown of Janesville and later with the Berryessa School District in San Jose, California. These roles reflected her strong work ethic and commitment to community service.

Shirley was preceded in death by her devoted husband Norris Getty; her son Scott Sheldon; her daughter Marlys Gregg; and her Granddaughter Mandy Carpenter. She is lovingly remembered by her daughter April Sheldon; her son-in-law Jeffrey Halper; her niece Laura Ewbank; grandchildren Lincoln Snyder, Sarrah Samaroo, Adam Mudgett, Zachary Warren, and Amelia Getty; her Stepdaughter Virginia Getty-Fredrickson; her stepsons Rodney Getty and John Getty; as well as numerous great and great-great-grandchildren who carry forward her legacy.

A private remembrance will be held by family at a later date.

May Shirley Getty's memory bring comfort to those who knew her and inspiration to all who encountered her art.

Aunt Shirley was an inspiration to me. My mother died when I was 25 and she was always there for me. She was a woman who was loving and strong. She had a lot of trauma in her life but she always rose above it and kept a positive view of life. She was a wonderful fun person to be around. I will miss talking and laughing with her.

I miss you already. I don't get to have lunch with you every day or play and laugh like we did so often.

I'm privileged to have had you as my Mom.

I'm not ready to say goodbye.

-April
