Shirley Harris Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Nov. 15 to Nov. 16, 2017.
Shirley Marie Harris, 90, of Blackfoot passed away Nov. 11, 2017 at Bingham Memorial Hospital Skilled Nursing Facility.
She was born in Spanish Fork, Utah to Alma Ray and Amelia Huff Ostler. At a young age, she moved with her parents to Salt Lake City where she attended school and graduated from East High in 1944.
After graduation, she met her future husband John. They were introduced to each other by his father who was Shirley's milkman. They both attended the University of Utah, and later were married on September 11, 1950.
During this time she worked for Mountain Bell as a telephone operator to help put John through school. They were then sealed for time and all eternity in the Idaho Falls Temple on Oct. 8, 1957.
Growing up, Shirley loved sports and participated in baseball, archery, track and was on the girls basketball team.
Later she belonged to the Blackfoot Literary Club and League of Women Voters. She was an avid bowler for 57 years, but had to retire due to health issues. She loved art, poetry, flowers, photography, birds, scrapbooking, playing the piano, reading and documented her life in her journal.
She was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served faithfully in various auxiliaries, but loved working with the Young Women. She and John served in the San Diego Mission from 1998-1999. She later served as a temple worker in the Idaho Falls Temple and very much enjoyed her work there.
Her greatest joy was spending time with her family at their get-away cabin in Island Park.
Shirley is survived by her husband, John of 67 years; her children, Melody (Cory) Moss of Roy, Utah, Michael (Joy) Harris of Idaho Falls, Robyn Harris, of Salt Lake City, and Kelly (Tallie) Harris, of Idaho Falls; and sister Renee Rodriguez of Salt Lake City; 10 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Alma Ray and Amelia Ostler.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 18 at the Blackfoot East Stake Center (12th Ward), with Bishop Brandon Bird officiating. The family will visit with friends and relatives on Friday night Nov. 17 from 6-8 at the Hawker Funeral Home and from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. prior to the service at the church.
The family wants to thank the wonderful Visiting Angels who assisted Shirley while she was at home and the nurses and staff from Bingham Memorial Hospital for the loving care they gave her in her short time there. Interment will be Monday, Nov at the Mount Olivet Cemetery in Salt Lake City, Utah from 1-2 p.m.
Condolences may be sent to the family at www.hawkerfuneralhome.com.

Dear John and Family,
Remembering the wonderful friendship you and Shirley shared with mother and dad and all the laughter during your dinner clubs at our home. The years are flying by but the memories are strong. Our thoughts are with you all. Susan (Jones) Madsen and Christine (Jones) Morgan.

I am so sad to hear about the passing of Shirley. As we raised our families on South University, I grew to love Shirley and all of the Harris Family. My thoughts and prayers are with the family now as they work through the grief. One of our favorite family quotations is this, "God gave us memories that we may have roses in December." I pray that your thoughts will be filled with the good memories of Shirley . . . your wife, mother, grandmother, and friend.

My thoughts are with the family during this difficult time. I hope that the promise in 1 Thessalonians 4:14 can bring comfort. Knowing that there is a hope for our love ones lost in death can be reassuring.

Kelly and family, words are hard to find at these sad times in our lives in losing a loved one. Our prayers and thoughts are with you all and want you to know what a great lady Shirley was to me in my life growing up in Blackfoot, as well as through out our adult lives, she was always kind to me and made me feel welcome and loved even into my adult life. Sorry I will not be able to attend the services, but my thoughts will be with you all. May god bless you with strength and great memories.
