The Dash Poem (By Linda Ellis)

I read of a man who stood to speak
At the funeral of a friend
He referred to the dates on the tombstone
From the beginning...to the end

He noted that first came the date of birth
And spoke the following date with tears,
But he said what mattered most of all
Was the dash between those years

For that dash represents all the time
That they spent alive on earth.
And now only those who loved them
Know what that little line is worth

For it matters not, how much we own,
The cars...the house...the cash.
What matters is how we live and love
And how we spend our dash.

So, think about this long and hard.
Are there things you'd like to change?
For you never know how much time is left
That can still be rearranged.

If we could just slow down enough
To consider what's true and real
And always try to understand
The way other people feel.

And be less quick to anger
And show appreciation more
And love the people in our lives
Like we've never loved before.

If we treat each other with respect
And more often wear a smile,
Remembering this special dash
Might only last a little while

So, when your eulogy is being read
With your life's actions to rehash...
Would you be proud of the things they say
About how you spent YOUR dash?

On March 19, 2023, Shirley's family and friends gathered together to honor and celebrate her life. Her son, Billy, and daughter, Gina, gave a eulogy and read her favorite poem - The Dash. Other family members and friends shared their favorite memories of times spent with her while Gina's church family prepared a meal in fellowship of the event and there was a special cake to commemorate her birthday.

My dear sister, Shirley, was special in every way and will be sorely missed by so many. Her life was a life lived to its fullest. She had a happy marriage, was a loving and devoted mother to her wonderful son, Billy, and sweet daughter, Gina, and a proud grandmother to Brady, Taylor and Willie. This is her legacy that will live on.
Because of the 14 year age difference between my sister and I, I felt like I was losing a beloved daughter rather than a sister when she left NH to marry her husband, Bill, those many years ago. I thought of her as "my little girl". Even though we were miles apart, we maintained that close bond that only sisters share. Shirley was kind, thoughtful and always ready to listen. She had a big heart and would try to help anyone in need. She was always available to encourage me and I her when spirits were low.
Even though she's gone, her beautiful, loving spirit will forever live on in my heart. I miss her dearly but look forward to seeing her again in Heaven.

Dear Aunt Shirley,
I remember especially our shared time of laughter and your wonderful sense of humor. We also shared a love of gardening and beautiful flowers. Though you are no longer with us, your kindness, compassion and love will never be forgotten. Your memory and life hold a special place in my heart. All my love, your niece, Donna

Dear Aunt Shirley, I am so thankful to have had you in my life. I will always remember how talented you were and how you inspired me in so many ways. Your lovingkindness touched my heart, and your wise counsel and listening ear was so appreciated. You were a woman of grace and elegance as well as being an example of a strong, beautiful woman. I cherish the times we were able to spend together and I want you to know that you will always be remembered in love and that you are deeply missed.
