We have lost a giant of a woman. I worked with her when I was a law clerk to Judge Thomas Fairchild and did whatever she told! We remained friends and I am deeply saddened by her passing.

I will always remember Shirley Newsome with the greatest affection and respect. We worked together to found the Donoghue and Woodlawn campuses of the University of Chicago Charter School to serve the children and families of the Oakland and Woodlawn communities. Her lasting legacy includes the students and graduates of these schools. Rest in power, Shirley, I am grateful for your advice, support, and friendship.

Always advocating for her community! Grateful for the time spent with a legend

I met Shirley Newsome when I served on the 002nd District DAC(District Advisory Council) for the Chicago Police. I immediately understood she was a woman of knowledge of the community she served. She carried herself with grace. I was glad to run into her when exiting a meeting at Monumental in August if 2021 and catch up for a bit. I never knew that would be the last time I would see her. She will be sorely missed. Condolences to her family.

I will miss your tactful and diplomacy and passion for residents of Oakwood Shore, as well as you input on various aspects on affordable housing. I am very glad that you and I sat together on the same table during Brittni’s Wedding and shared some good laughs. Rest in Peace, you have left a legacy.

I met Shirley when she worked for Judge Fairchild in the Court of Appeals back in 1977. She always had a smile and a laugh for everyone. I eventually took a job with a judge who had previously worked as a clerk for Judge Fairchild, so my association with her continued even after I left the court. She was one classy lady.

I grew up on Blackstone next door to the Carey’s so I’ve known her my entire life. Glenn was my self proclaimed God brother whom I miss dearly. Ms. Shirley was a great friend of my mother Doris Calloway and a member of the beloved Keno Club. She was a woman to be admired!!
