Shirley Pape Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Mar. 25 to Mar. 28, 2021.
Shirley Nyman Pape
1922 - 2021
Born in 1922 on the occasion of her mother's birthday, Shirley - nee: Shirley Olive Nyman (initials SON) - grew up on Day Island in Tacoma, Washington. Her mother, Alma Estelle, delighted in her arrival while her father, Gustave Einar, took great pleasure in telling his friends that his SON had arrived.
With Puget Sound at her backyard her lifelong love of all things nautical was inevitable. Her insatiable thirst for learning earned her valedictorian status at Tacoma's Stadium High School and laid the foundation for her entry as a freshman into Mills College. A year later she matriculated at Stanford University from which she intended to graduate. She returned home, however, after the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor and enrolled at the University of Washington. During that time she met and married Portlander Lt. H. Dean Pape, a mechanical engineering student at Oregon State College. A short four months after they wed Dean shipped off to England. Shirley returned to UW graduating with a BA in Theater then headed to Los Angeles to audition for radio. Dean's return to the states at war's end altered her radio aspirations. She and Dean moved to and settled in Eugene where Dean joined his brother in the family business known today as The Pape Group. Shirley focused on making a home for her family and caring for their four children. She became involved in many volunteer activities, as well, including Sacred Heart's Hospital Guild and the Eugene Welfare League, the precursor to The Junior League of Eugene.
In the late 50's and with the backing of the Welfare League Shirley co-produced and starred in the weekly children's storybook television show, "The Fairy Tale Princess". It was broadcast on KVAL-TV in Eugene and KPIC-TV in Roseburg. A year later the cast and crew added a second show weekly by trooping it to the top floor of The Bon Marche in downtown Eugene. After the "The Fairy Tale Princess" ran its course, Shirley returned to college earning a Masters' Degree in Journalism from the University of Oregon. Soon thereafter she became Women's Editor for the then newly licensed ABC affiliate, KEZI-TV. She reveled in interviewing local, regional, and national personalities including Broadcast Journalist, Edward R. Morrow; First Lady, Pat Nixon; and Joseph P. Kennedy family matriarch, Rose Kennedy. Keeping the community informed on medical issues earned her the Oregon Medical Association's annual award for excellence in medical editorials in 1965. 'The following year and again in 1975 she received the Mental Health Association's Communication Award. When Shirley was not in the KEZI studio or caring for her family she was in the skies earning her private pilot's license. Then, as her broadcast career came to an end, she returned to the classroom to study the dietary sciences at OSU and OHSU eventually becoming a licensed and practicing Registered Dietician. It was during this time that she and Dean moved from Eugene to Portland.
Her children grown and with all the enthusiasm in her adventurous soul, Shirley travelled the world as much as possible with her husband and, after his death, extensively with the Stanford Alumni Association, her children, grandchildren, and all great-grandchildren old enough to participate. Cruising rivers, lakes, oceans, and seas were always her favorite. When she was not travelling, Shirley enjoyed playing duplicate bridge where she earned Grand Master's status from the American Contract Bridge League. She also took great joy in establishing The Pape Family Foundation and working with Oregon State University on the construction of a Campanile on the Quad in Dean's memory. Once these projects could stand on their own she directed her attention to The Doernbecher Children's Hospital Foundation working with the Board of Directors to establish The Pape Family Pediatric Research Institute. Whenever possible, she loved spending time at her La Jolla home, attending performing arts events, reading, walking, entertaining, and all things family and friends, not necessarily in that order.
Preceded in death by her husband, Dean, in 1996 and son, Randy Pape, in 2008 Shirley is survived by her daughter, Dian Pape Tooke, sons Gary Pape, Terry Pape and wife, Vicki, daughter-in-law, Susie Pape, 14 grandchildren, and 25 great-grandchildren. At Shirley's request no public memorial service will take place, however, for those who wish to send memorials, please do so to:

I had the pleasure of first meeting and working with Shirley when she served as a member The PeaceHealth Sacred Heart Medical Center Foundation Board of Directors in Eugene, OR; and, again, when she served as a member of the OHSU Foundation Board of Directors, in Portland, OR during my career as a senior development professional. I will always remember her exemplary service and philanthropic generosity to both institutions through her deep commitment to bringing better healthcare and improved quality of life to all Oregonians. I was also fortunate to have had her friendship and sage advice of some 20 years. Thank you, Shirley. Rest In Peace.

I first met Shirley at OSU as a dietetics student. I remember we were all amazed that she was taking on a new career. I left before graduating to follow my husband to K-State and earned my RD.

Years and Years later, I again met Shirley as one of the earliest residents at Mirabella Portland. We had a good time saying we went to college together and watching people wonder about that. She was among my father's first friends at Mirabella - someone he considered a touchstone. I always enjoyed running into Shirley in the Bistro or the hallway - just being able to say hello and have a connection to someone else when visiting Dad was a pleasure.

Thank you for sharing her with us.

I first met Shirley as a relatively new faculty member, when I had the opportunity to present some of our work to the Doernbecher Foundation. She was kind and gracious, but asked the hardest questions! Shirley had an amazing ability to get "to the heart of the matter", even when discussing complex social of scientific issues. Later in my career I had the honor of spending several wonderful evenings with Shirley and her family, enjoying dinners on the lawn overlooking the river. Her generous spirit and quick wit always made for an enjoyable time. I now have the great honor of directing the institute that bears her family name, and that grew out of her vision and guidance. I will miss Shirley, but I am confident that we will continue to do great work in her honor for the children of Oregon and beyond.

I’m a fan of Shirley. When I was a child, I remember watching her on tv and thinking how pretty and kind she was. She was 30 years my senior, so perhaps she was 40ish when I was 10ish! Lol I have never forgotten the experience of feeling good just watching her.

I'm sure the Lord will enjoy her gentility and grace as much as we did at Toastmasters.

Terry, this is your old friend from Stanford, Mary Lou Johnson (Laybourn). I stand in awe at your mother’s life and legacy. How lucky you are to have had such a remarkable presence in your life. I wish you comfort as you adjust to the finality of her being gone. Take care...and I hope all is well with you and yours.

The McFarland family (including my late parents) had many fond memories of Shirley and Dean Pape and enjoyed traveling and visiting with them over the years. My parents and I admired the many contributions they made to making our world a better place for so many of its citizens. Shirley was always a joy to be with and will be missed by all who knew her. Shirley and I served on the Doernbecher Children's Hospital Foundation Board together. She was a wonderful role model and active board member. She was a gracious and fun host and she included us at many wonderful gatherings at her condo in Portland. I admired her courage and strength. Shirley's family was near and dear to her heart and she wanted others to have healthy children. My condolences to the Pape Family.
Rest in Peace Shirley. You will be missed.

I had the joy and privilege of working with Shirley while I was at the Doernbecher Foundation. She was truly a mission-driven Foundation Board member, a philanthropic role model, and a great friend of many clinicians, researchers and administrators at OHSU/Doernbecher. Together we enjoyed many wonderful gatherings, seminars, presentations, strategy sessions over our regular lunches and fundraising events. She was devoted to the ethos of pediatric medicine, especially research. Her generosity was extraordinary. We had great fun together and I so admire the love she had for her family. I will dearly miss her.

Shirley and I enjoyed early mornings on Thursdays at the Arlington Club Toastmasters. She always had a good story to tell and a great sense of humor. I think of her often and have always admired her venturesome approach to living life. She was involved or able to do a myriad of things and they all seemed to bring her pleasure.

Condolences to the family. Shirley was such a gracious hostess and kind lady. I fondly remember her opening her lovely home near Hendricks Park in Eugene to the Tri Delta chapter at the U of O for rush parties when I was in college.

I have so many wonderful memories of Shirley. Patricia and I visited her home many times and I attended many board meetings with her. She was such a gracious host and also such a valued contributor to any group that she joined. I would have loved to see her TV show. I am especially grateful for her enduring support of the welfare of children and specifically to pediatric research at OHSU. To say that she will be missed is woefully insufficient. Thanks to all of you who supported Shirley in so many ways.

Shirley often played duplicate bridge at the Eugene Bridge Club when I played there. She was a delightful, accomplished, and intelligent woman and I have only good memories of her. My condolences to her family and friends on her loss.
