Shirley Anne Schell (née Samuelson), age 91, passed away peacefully on March 22, 2025, in
Oakland, California. A devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and tireless advocate for social justice, Shirley lived a life marked by compassion, intellect, and service to others.
Born on June 15, 1933, in Smith Center, Kansas, Shirley was the daughter of Raymond Albert "Sam" Samuelson and Irene Arabella Moon Samuelson. From an early age, she demonstrated a deep curiosity about the world and a strong sense of responsibility toward her community-qualities that would define her life's work.
Shirley graduated from the University of Kansas with a Bachelor of Arts degree. She was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa for academic excellence and was also a member of Sigma Delta Pi and Gamma Phi Beta. Her time at university laid the foundation for a lifelong commitment to learning and civic engagement.
Throughout her life, Shirley championed housing rights and services for underserved communities. Her professional and volunteer efforts were deeply rooted in advocacy for those in need. She served on the board of directors for numerous organizations including the League of Women Voters, California Housing Coalition, Family and Children's Welfare Advisory Committee, Bishops' Community, AFS of Piedmont (Acacia Branch), and Children's Hospital. Her leadership in these roles reflected her unwavering dedication to improving lives through policy reform and community support.
Shirley shared 70 years of marriage with her beloved husband Farrel Loy Schell. Together they built a home filled with warmth, laughter, and purpose. Their enduring partnership was enriched by their shared love of travel-they explored the world together-and by their mutual commitment to family and service.
She is lovingly remembered by her son James Christopher Schell; her daughter Maria Leslyn Peter and son-in-law Larry; and her granddaughter Amanda Marie Peter. Shirley's legacy lives on through them and through all who were touched by her kindness and generosity.
A woman of many talents and interests, Shirley found joy in music-she played the violin and sang with great enthusiasm. She delighted in cooking and baking, especially making jam alongside her mother-a cherished tradition she carried throughout her life. Tea parties held a special place in her heart as moments to gather with loved ones. She also had a deep appreciation for reading, art, and global cultures.
Shirley was known not only for her public service but also for being an incredible hostess and friend. Her home was often filled with conversation, laughter, thoughtful debate-and always something delicious from the kitchen. She gave freely of herself to others without hesitation or expectation.
In lieu of cards or gifts, donations may be made in Shirley's memory to
Save the Redwoods at 111 Sutter Street, 11th Floor, San Francisco, CA 94104-a cause close to her heart.
May Shirley Anne Schell's memory bring comfort to those who knew her and continue to inspire acts of kindness in communities near and far. A private Celebration of Life will be held on June 13, 2025, by her family, at St. Paul's Towers.
