Shirley Whitt Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 27, 2025.
Shirley Jane Whitt, age 76 of Brookwood, AL peacefully passed away on June 21, 2025 at her residence, surrounded by her family. Shirley was born on September 23, 1948 in Sophia, WV to Susie and Ray Daniel.

Shirley was a beacon of joy and warmth to all who knew her. Her life was a testament to the power of love, faith, and resilience.

Shirley was preceded in death by her loving parents, Susie and Ray Daniel, and her husband, James; brothers Robert Daniel, Hustie Daniel, Clayton Daniel, Walter Daniel; sisters Frankey May, and Mary Marie. She leaves behind her children, Tammy Tooley (James), Michael Whitt (Dana), and Kimberly Carter (Timmy), 5 grandchildren, Scott Vestal, Amber Vice (Roy), Sarah Green (Matthew), Logan Whitt (Alyssa), Joshua Williams, 7 great grandchildren, a loving sister, Rosie and special friends Peggy Walker and Karen Hicks, all of who will carry on her legacy of kindness and compassion.

Shirley embraced her belief in Jesus Christ with an unwavering faith, that provided her with strength throughout her life. She was married to her beloved husband, James Richard Whitt, for 12 cherished years before his untimely passing. She then raised three wonderful children who became the center of her world. Shirley's love for her family was boundless, and she found immense joy in her role as a devoted mother, grandmother, and great grandmother.

Her career at Expressions allowed her to touch many lives. Her colleagues and customers will always remember her infectious smile and laughter; traits that defined her warm and loving nature.

If you ever stopped by her house you would find her enjoying her "westerns" while crocheting, crafting, or sewing. Shirley was known for loving with her entire heart and always willing to lend a helping hand.

If you knew Ms. Shirley, (affectionately known as Nana), then your "pea-picking" heart was surely "blessed" by her at some point. Her spirit will continue to live on in the hearts of all those she touched.

A memorial service for family and friends will be held in the Chapel at Skyland Baptist Church on Monday July 7th from 6-8 p.m. with Rodney Tyson officiating. A private graveside service will follow at a later date in her hometown of Sophia, West Virginia.

In her own words, Shirley offered a written poem of comfort to her family and friends during this difficult time:

"God came down and took me home today, which blocked your sun and put clouds in your way. When you get to heaven, beside me you will stand. Again we will smile and I will hold your hand. I know you will miss me a little less each day, and it will get easier for you to find your way. I want you to know I will always be around, when you feel all alone, just know I am looking down. I may just be the wind blowing through a tree but, when you need someone close your eyes and there I'll be. I want to make you feel, that I am never too far. Look to the sky at night and see my love shining from a star."

Shirley's presence will be dearly missed, but the memories she created with those she loved will continue to bless them.

The family would like to extend a special "Thank You" to Paula Pedram, Dr. Hughes and staff, and to ACG Hospice (Laura, Michael, Danielle, Kelli, and Shelly) all of whom made the transition of her life peaceful.

When thinking of mother in laws, I can honestly say I had the best. She loved me unconditionally and showed so much grace and compassion. She has always made me laugh even when she didn´t feel like it and she loved her family with every fiber of her being. Rest in Peace Shirley, we will see you again! It´s not goodbye but see ya later! Miss Shirley was always so kind and encouraging to both Richard and I every time we were around her.
Her Facebook posts, which were always an encouragement, will truly be missed. She never missed an opportunity to give God praise and honor. My heart goes out to each one of her family. Praying for peace and comfort for all knew and loved her.
