Sian Allen Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 31, 2025.
One of the most popular television actresses of the 1970s and 80s and Golden Globe nominee, Sian Barbara Allen, has died of Alzheimer's Disease at 78 on March 31, 2025 in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

Sian was born in Reading, PA on July 12, 1946 and raised by her mother, Ruth Pokrass, with support from her grandmother, Etta Berger. Upon graduation from high school, she accepted a scholarship to the Pasadena Playhouse, where she had her first encounter with success and glowing reviews. Sian also studied with the influential Peggy Feury as a member of the Journeyman program at the Mark Taper Forum.

As her talent matured, her opportunities grew. She was soon hired as one of the last contract players at Universal Studios. Sian quickly began to have starring roles in most of the successful television series of the times, including THE WALTONS, MARCUS WELBY, MD, BONANZA, GUNSMOKE, CAGNEY AND LACEY, LOVE AMERICAN STYLE, THE ROCKFORD FILES, COLUMBO, ADAM-12, KOJAK, HAWAII 5-0 and THE INCREDIBLE HULK, among many others. She was also the first woman to write a script that was produced for BARETTA, in 1978.

Sian appeared in a long list of films with major stars (who almost always became friends). In 1972, she starred in YOU'LL LIKE MY MOTHER with Patty Duke, Rosemary Murphy and Richard Thomas; and for that film, was nominated for a Golden Globe as the Most Promising New Actress. That role was quickly followed in 1973 by SCREAM PRETTY PEGGY with Bette Davis; a 1974 western, BILLY TWO HATS, with Gregory Peck and Jack Warden; and in 1975 a TV movie called ERIC opposite Claude Akins, John Savage and Patricia Neal. In 1976, Sian played Ann Morrow Lindbergh opposite Anthony Hopkins and Cliff DeYoung in THE LINDBERGH KIDNAPPING CASE.

Sian was most often cast in roles in which her characters showed great vulnerability and uncommon empathy, which won her a legion of fans all over the world. Sian also performed in the theatre. One of her favorite roles was Emily Webb in OUR TOWN at the Williamstown Theatre Festival in 1976. Sian later named her daughter Emily in honor of this beloved character.

One of Sian's proudest achievements was receiving the Key to the City of her hometown, Reading, PA.

After her withdrawal from public life in 1990, Sian maintained an intense focus on politics. Along with then-husband, Peter, and daughter, Emily, they volunteered for Jackie Goldberg's 1993 city council campaign in Los Angeles. Sian was a staunch supporter of Cesar Chavez and the United Farm Workers and never crossed a picket line in her entire life. Sian was also a remarkable poet and leaves behind boxes of writing that her family will be able to read for a very long time.

Sian's favorite things in the world were her family, mystery books, C-SPAN, poetry, all things Ireland, Bob Dylan, Paul Simon's Graceland album, mac and cheese, root beer floats and bacon cheeseburgers (no lettuce or tomato). She lived her final year of life in North Carolina, surrounded by all of her favorite things, new friends, and more time with Emily than she'd had in 35 years.

Sian is survived by her daughter, Emily Fonseca (Max Fonseca), two sisters, Hannah Davie and Meg Pokrass, nephew, Miles Bond, ex-husband, Peter Gelblum, cousins Marcy, Mike, and Mark Reuben and grandson, Arlo Fonseca, who made her laugh more than anyone could dream.

In lieu of a service, Emily asks that you choose from the following actions to honor Sian:

- Donate to a local, grassroots organization working to combat systems of oppression

- Donate to AuthoraCare Collective Hospice of Burlington who ensured Sian spent her final months peaceful and free of pain. Please consider directing your gift to support patients and families needing financial assistance to provide for loved ones.

- Read your favorite book in bed

- Listen to the entire Graceland album or any of Bob Dylan's music

- Eat some mac and cheese, a bacon cheeseburger or drink a rootbeer float

I appreciate the beautiful obituary and will appreciate more the shows that I will continue to watch where she is apart. It is obvious that she had wonderful support not only from her family, but from those who cared for her in her later years. Jon Wamsley (who was Jason Walton) posted a beautiful FB memory which prompted me to look for her Legacy Obituary. Thank you for writing one. Lots of people don´t understand how important it is for history and how comforting it must be to read especially from people who share those personal memories, who knew her, to the family you may never have known about. As the family moves thru closure and items and her writings - pictures and the like - preserve them - for future "Jennys"/Sians.

I just ran across Sian's obituary and am saddened to hear of her passing. She was wonderful in her craft and I always felt she would be a warm caring person. When I read of her love for Bob Dylan and Paul Simon's Graceland album I felt a connection to her. I have loved and listened to Bob Dylan's music for many decades and do to this day. Paul Simon's Graceland is my favorite collection of his work. God bless you Sian. You were born in my state of Pennsylvania. Live with God in his loving care

My tweens in the `70s were an often confusing time and when I first saw Sian - I think it was a "Partridge Family" episode, I´m immediately took notice of her.

Her guiless innocence and fresh honesty touched me in those few minutes and I started noticing her in other favorite shows.

I always felt that should we´d have met in real life, we might´ve become friends.

I guess that´s a mark of a talented actor - and, I believe, a person with with courage to be able to play all kinds of characters with honesty and life.

I felt as if she truly inhabited her characters and believed in them. They lived well in her.

She was a touchstone in my younger life - of the people and parts she played, as well as the light behind her shining eyes. Always able to cross through stage, screen, and time to let me feel as if I was there with her. And safe in our "friendship from afar".

Sail safely, Sian - till the tides of time take you to your eternal home.

Barbara and I were very close as cousins till about 13. We would shop around Reading and go to movies together. Her mother bought me my first heels and stockings
She met my daughter when daughter was in camp in Maine and Barbara was at a local theater
I regret losing contact over the years, as she was a wonderful, kind person

I am so sad to learn of Sian Barbara's passing. Just tonight I was watching the Love Story episode of The Waltons and thought I'd look on Google to see if Sian was still in acting roles, and learned the very sad news of her passing. Sian had the most endearing and caring eyes. As they closed for the final time, the world lost a most unusual and special soul, but Heaven gained an angel.

I love watching her on the Waltons. She did play a person that was very nice and kind and timid. That is not the only show that I've ever really remember watching her on. I love watching her character on the Waltons. May her soul rest in peace, free from the terrible bondage of Alzheimer's disease.

Recently saw "Billy Two Hats" again. Sian Barbara Allen gave the most genuine performance of the entire movie, including Gregory Peck´s. Her earnest and desperate, brow beaten, stuttering mail order wife gave much needed dimension to the film. Wish she´d had more big screen work. Her depth was under appreciated in Hollywood. You won´t be forgotten by your admirers. Rest in heavenly peace.

I met Sian at Williamstown Theatre Festival when she played Emily Webb in Our Town and I played the kid sister Rebecca Gibbs. I haven't seen her since then but just had the impulse to look her up and saw the sad news of her passing. She was just lovely in that role and I was moved to read that she named her daughter Emily after that ordinary extraordinary character who encompasses the transitions so many girls and women go through in life and beyond. At the time she was so kind to me as a newbie actor. Once she invited me to her hotel for lunch and she ordered us tuna fish sandwiches on toast from room service, which I found both glamorous and down to earth, as she seemed to be. I will eat one in bed in her memory whilst rereading Our Town.

Sian was my favorite actress. She was very sweet. Her character Jenny on the Waltons was outstanding. She was my favorite guest star on The Waltons. I was hoping she would be on more than twice. Sian would be the kind of friend I would want in real life. I hope she didnt suffer and passed peacefully. I will never forget her. She was a beloved actress whom I really loved. As many, my tital favorite of The Waltons was the very first eoisode, she was John Boy's love. A part of me had longed for their character to grow together, and get married. She was such a positive force in rhe Walton family. I am sad for your family. So grateful that they had the priviledge to know you in this life. You were and are trully loved.

We worked together in The Bishop's Company, 1965, a month long tour of the western states. You were so quietly passionate, non-assuming, beautiful in every way but you never flaunted, sweet, kind and oh did you love Bob Dylan's music! And you were so darn talented, I knew I was outclassed but didn't mind a bit. I was over-the-moon happy when you at last made the big time. I'm glad you had a career doing what you wanted to. When I learned you had a Facebook page you were already in the grip of that damn disease. Now you are free of it. Rest now, Sian Barbara Allen, you beautiful soul ...

Sian Barbara Allen and I were roommates at the Pasadena Playhouse in our very first year. What a lucky break for 16-year-old me to have a roommate who was so calm, well read and kind. We laughed over so much and listened to her favorite artist at the time, Bob Dylan. Her favorite song of his was "Mr. Tambourine Man," which we listened to tirelessly. She showed as much genuine interest in my favorites, Barbra Streisand and Morgana King and introduced me to John Steinbecks writings of "Sweet Thursday" and "Cannery Row." Together we snuck into the Auditorium and practiced our monologues on the large mainstage before our auditions for placement in specific classes. Luckily, we both did well and ended up in the same classes where we performed in scenes, studied theater history, learned stage make-up and practiced our lines together later in our dorm room. By 9pm, we were starving and would quietly leave the dorm to eat at one of the first TACO BELL shacks. With 99cents each we'd buy one Taco, devour it and sneak back into the dorm. Many have mentioned Sian's beautiful sparkling eyes and yes, they were the windows to her soul on and off the stage. Angels don't always have wings on earth but hers were always evident to me. I'd like to think she's completely enveloped in them now.

Sian and I shared a wonderful season at Seattle Rep in '70-'71: we were sibs in "Hay Fever" with Maureen O'Sullivan and spouses in "A Flea in Her Ear". She was our luminous Queen in "Richard II" and I was Hotspur. Later in LA she got me a meeting w/ William Morris (so typical of her). I am heartbroken. She was always irreplaceable in my heart. I was in my teens in the 1970´s and spent a lot of weekday evenings watching TV instead of doing homework.
Sian Barbara Allen was a brunette (like me) stand-out in a sea of TV blondes. I´d check the guest star lists in TV Guide to see if and when she´d appear on my favorite shows. Her performances were always perfect: vulnerable and endearing. I hope she had a reasonably happy life.

I was a kid in the 70s and the past few years love watching shows and movies from that time. I've seen Sian on several of them-- Rockford Files, Columbo, and I believe it was Ironside. Her smile radiates and she steals scenes just with her presence-- it ended up looking her up on IMDb to read about her. There are so many character actors, so many faces from that era, but hers always stands out. She is memorable in every role. I was saddened to read that she passed away. Sending warmest condolences to you, her loved ones.
