Sidney Bentley Obituary

Published by Vancouver Sun and/or The Province on Nov. 3, 2012.
January 20, 1927 - October 25, 2012 Sidney James Bentley was born in Stoughton, Sask. and passed away October 25, 2012 after a short battle with cancer. He leaves behind his beloved wife of almost 66 years, Shelia, his children Rick (Jan) of Comox, Kerry (Anne) of Tsawwassen and Tracey (Rob) of Edmonton along with 9 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. He will be fondly remembered as a frequent volunteer (picking fruit for the Surrey Food Bank, shovelling snow from neighbourhood driveways and helping seniors put up their Christmas lights), a wonderful storyteller and a regular at the rec centre near his White Rock home. His stories came from an interesting work life, beginning as a teen working on paddlewheel boats in the Yukon before entering the world of sales (of just about anything that can be sold), before finding his calling as an educator. He will be remembered by his colleagues and students as a teacher of 25 years at William Beagle Secondary in Surrey, retiring in 1992. He left his mark in BC education circles with the development and teaching of his innovative course on world religions, and the publishing of his book "Religions of Our Neighbours". It is through these latter efforts that he met and sincerely touched a very wide circle of people, and will be missed by them. Sid's family wishes to express a special thanks to the staff of Peace Arch Hospital for the care and comfort they extended to him. A celebration of his life will be held at Northwood United Church, 8855 - 156 Street in Surrey at 3:00 PM on Monday November 12, 2012. Donations in lieu of flowers can be made in his memory to the BC Cancer Foundation.

I was a student of "Mr. Bentley's" in the mid 70's at William Beagle. I know most people remember Sid for his religions class, but he also left a great legacy as a teacher. I still remember - and most of all use - what he taught us in electronics, drafting, and surveying.

Soh cah toa - Sid!

I taught with Sid for many years. He loved his job and his students. His religious course was very popular with the students as He became a Hindu, a Jew, a Muslim,a Christian and you believed his beliefs. I really believe if his course had been taught in Canada and around the world; our planet would be a more tolerant place today. I saw Sid at the hospice and he gave us a smile. He will be sorrowfully missed by all who had the privilege to know him.

Mr. Bentley was a wonderful teacher, who I had the privilege to work with during my teach training years. I always rember our religion field trips fondly. You taught me a great deal and I hope I can foster tolerance, acceptance and love like you did with your students.

After hearing about Sid's passing I took a long walk in my neighbourhood, something Sid once suggested as a way of getting to know each other. Stop and say hello, ask how things are going, wish people well, share a smile. I am confident he is still carrying out his advice in the better place he now is residing. I hope the following words will provide some measure of comfort as we collectively mourn the loss of a wonderful person.
"When you are sorrowful, look again in your heart and you shall see that in truth, you are weeping for that which has been your delight.~Kahlil Gibran"

This day, Sid married the love of his life! November 8, 1946

I had Mr Bentley as a homeroom teacher in Grade 8 and 9. I don't have one particular memory of him, I just remember that he seemed to have a very positive light around him. He was kind and caring. I was sad that there were only 2 students at his funeral today.

Dear Sid,

I have had your picture up in my classroom for the last 14 years. I have introduced you to my parents and some of my most special students. There is so much I have learned from you over the years about tolerance, acceptance and respect. Boy, I will miss you, and I am a better person because you were a part of my life.

I only met Sid through a brief World Religions field trip I took in my grade 12 year nearly 2 years ago.

However, that field trip was made by his energy and knowledge. He was funny and knowledgable - and had more energy than many of us did at 17. I don't know how that field trip will be without him - but it (and I'm sure everything he was involved with) will be missing his energy.

Mr.Bentley was an amazing educator, he not only taught but opened our minds to the world around us. I took his multifaith course at William Beagle, which was one of the most influential courses in my life. God bless you Mr.Bentley.....you left a beautiful mark on this earth.

Reflecting on Uncle Sid's life, that which stands out the most is his enthusiasm, his quest for knowledge, his passion for the subjects he taught, and his tireless desire to pass along his knowledge to those he met. He will be greatly missed.

If anyone is wondering whether or not one person can really affect the world, just have them read all of the comments people have made about Sid Bentley...

I was a student of Sid's at William Beagle before the World Religions courses for which he is justifiably recognized. And, I had the chance to spend a couple of hours alone with him a few weeks before he died. We had a "nuts and bolts" conversation; no beating around the bush. Despite the fact that we hadn't talked for close to 40 years, it was as if we'd been lifelong friends. Clearly, he'd had a lasting effect on me.

During the conversation, Sid emphasized a few things that I think are worth sharing with everyone:

1) Sid believed that he'd had a good life and was content with what he had accomplished. Sid had gotten into teaching because he wanted to give back to the world and make it a better place, knowing that the only true legacy a person can have is to help others along the way and to try to make the world a better place.

2) Sid firmly believed that all of mankind, nature, and some sort of spiritual world are connected. He had a benefactor who had made it possible for him to leave the world of sales and become a teacher, who had recognized that helping spread truth and understanding was Sid's calling. Sid believed that nobody can make it through life alone; it's our relationships with others that matter.

3) during our two hours together, he mentioned at least half a dozen times that the best thing that ever happened to him was his wife, Shelia. Sid said he could never quite figure out what she saw in him when they first met, but was sure happy that she saw something!

Like so many others, I am very glad to have had Sid as a teacher.

Hey Sid...you were a bright light in this profession. Your engaging style of conversation and your knowledge of so many diverse topics made you a wonderful and inspiring teacher, and your Religions of the World course was a great example to the youth of an increasingly diversified Surrey during those years at Beagle...and Sid we had a great time at your parties too, with the Beagle crowd of those years, and of course that was a great staff, dynamic and fun both in and out of the school....Sid, I don't know where you are right now, but I am sure that where ever it is you are making quite an impression already...and so I send you my best wishes. All the very best to you my friend...forever.

My condolences to the Bentley family. Sid's work with world religions and teaching respect and commonality among his fellow man will forever be etched in the minds of my students. Sid and I worked together on various filed trips and experiences for kids for the past 10 years and we always enjoyed his stories and the way he made the faiths come alive to us. He will be sadly missed, but fondly remembered.

Sorry to hear about Mr. Bentley's passing. I was a student at William Beagle and took Social Studies and World Religions in particular from him. He was a great teacher, and I remember his gentle way of opening our minds to the world beyond our own homes. He also inspired me to facilitate/teach a class on world religions in my own congregation, many years ago now. Thank you Mr. Bentley!

Sid was my teacher of multiple years and courses, and then a personal friend of my family's as we summered at Watcom Lake over the years. He was kind, sincere and compassionate. His gentle understanding and encouragement played a large role in my education and he made a huge impact on my life. Sid was an incredible man and I am honoured to have shared time with him. I will never forget Sid, and I will forever remember his ready smile and wit. To Sid: tight lines and plentiful fish - you were very much loved and appreciated.
