I first met Sid in Glasgow in the 1980s when he and I were doing research in psycho-oncology. He was a man of great kindness, humanity and integrity who was not interested in empire building or personal glory, but was dedicated to applying good scientific method to demonstrate how patients with cancer could be helped psychologically. His success here must have helped innumerable patients, not only his own patients but also those of others who had read and acted on his published work. I greatly respected Sid: a good scientist whose patients immediately spotted how much he cared about them. The world needs more people like him.
I remember Sid telling me that he played the trumpet. As I play the organ, I had always meant to suggest we play together some works for trumpet and organ, but somehow never got round to it. I regret that now.
