I have now read his book of his wartime experiences for the 3rd time. It is an extraordinary historical work. He was an extraordinary man.

Mr. Knappe's incredible wartime experiences, followed by years as a prisoner in a Soviet gulag, are testimony to his will, endurance, and strength of character. He was a true "survivor." His wonderful book and television documentary interviews have been a significant contribution to the history of the war. Upon reading "Soldat," I was so moved I contacted him in Xenia to ask if he would sign the book. What I really wanted was to meet this remarkable man. He graciously welcomed me to his home where I was honored to meet him, his lovely wife, Lilo and, later, his daughter Sylvia. My deepest condolences to his children. May his soul rest in peace.
