Simon Fuentes Jr Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 10, 2024.
In Loving Memory of Simon "Sam" Vasquez Fuentes Jr.

Simon Vasquez Fuentes Jr., known affectionately as Sam, aged 77, departed this life on May 3, 2024, in Odessa, Texas. Born to the late Simon Fuentes Sr. and Paula Vasquez Fuentes on February 14, 1947, in the small town of Marathon, Texas, he grew to be a man of great character and warmth.

Sam's early education was completed at Sanderson High School. His patriotic spirit led him to serve his country in the Army, a period of his life marked by discipline and dedication. Sam built a career in the oil and gas industry for over 40 years, which saw him traverse the oil fields from West Texas to the distant shores of Saudi Arabia. He eventually retired with a wealth of experiences and settled back into the quiet life of Sanderson, where his story began.

Those who knew Sam will recall his love for a simple life and its simple pleasures. His love for family shone brightest when surrounded by his grandchildren, with whom he shared countless precious moments.

Sam's legacy is carried on through his sons, Scott & Traci Fuentes of Midland TX, Jerry & Angela Fuentes of Midland TX, and Michael & Marcia Fuentes of Monahans TX, and his adored lgrandchildren, Erin, Justin, Mya, Coby, Alyssa, Izzie, and Lexie. He is also survived by his sisters, Dr. Maria Fuentes Leas and Marge Sanchez, and his brothers, Fred and George Fuentes. Sam was predeceased by his devoted wife, Teresa Irene Fuentes, and his brother Herman Fuentes.

Sam's departure leaves a void in the hearts of his family and friends. His memory will be honored and cherished, and his stories retold with love and respect. As we bid farewell to a kind, funny, and sometimes stubborn man, we are comforted by the knowledge that his spirit lives on in the lives of those he touched.

A life well-lived and well-loved, Sam Fuentes will be missed but never forgotten. Rest in eternal peace.

Services will be held at St James Catholic Church Sanderson TX 79848 on May 19th at 1:00pm.

I knew Sam during 1980 to 1983, during an oil boom in Monahans Texas. I´ve thought about him occasionally during the years. I was just out of the Military. I went to work for Halliburton and I was his cement pump truck driver. He took me under his wing and helped me as a young man! He was always good to me and I have never forgotten him.

My name is Richard Gonzales, I met Simon when I bought a ranch in Panther Canyon. The times when I would go to my ranch I could always count on Simon coming by and offering a hand in whatever I was doing. I would give him some cigars which I believe he really enjoyed. I will miss him. When he was getting ready to hang up during our phone conversations he would always say :YO". Until we meet again my friend.

Sam was pleasant to visit with. He would tell me that Marcia took good care of him. He said both Marcia and Irene were good cooks. He tried to make you feel good. He shared his ranch with us. It´s a nice place to visit. Lee Cook (Gramz)
