Ich werde Dich immer sehr gerne in Erinnerung haben! Herr Kern, my grandmother Knobel cherished the many visitations. She was excited to speak with you in her native language German. I will always remember you deeply for the friendship we shared together.

Sam,
I will always cherish our friendship. Such fond memories of you along with Ed, and Terri at Baldwin. And, you kept in touch after we left Pittsburgh for York, PA. You helped Sally and me in several moves. You've left an enduring legacy.
Rest in peace.

I will always remember "Herr Kern" fondly. I remember the Christmas Herr Kern took our class around his neighborhood singing Christmas carols in German! I remember how he would bring in German magazines to help us learn "everyday" German. I remember his teaching us not only the language but the history and current events of Germany. I remember during the Vietnam "Moratorium" when classes were allowed to hold discussions about the Vietnam war; our class became alive with serious and heartfelt conversations about the war and our feelings. He taught us a language but he also taught us about life. My heart goes out to the Kern family. He will be sorely missed.

As others have written, Sam was my favorite teacher. It's because of Sam's passion for German that I studied German in college, worked for a German company and later became a German teacher. He was also a great leader of our backpacking trips. Soooo many wonderful memories.
Deepest Sympathy to Sam's family.
Bridgeville was heaven to him.
