I visited Daneways in the late sixties with my head of department Peggy Angus. She was a friend of Simon's uncle Oliver Hill. We met Simon who was carving letters in a pigeon loft....still a young lad. In 1987 my husband and I commissioned him to carve lines from St Patrick's breast plate for a wedding present to each other; I remember he was charging nine shillings a letter !
Subsequently we all became good friends and he lived with us in our house in Wells throughout the time he was working on the restoration of the West Front of Wells Cathedral. This culminated in his carving the seated king, at that time one of only three new carvings commissioned. So his carving career really began in Wells. A very good friend..so sad he has now gone.
