Skip Caray Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 4, 2008.
ATLANTA (AP) – Skip Caray, a voice of the Atlanta Braves for 33 years and part of a family line of baseball broadcasters that included Hall of Famer Harry Caray, died in his sleep at home on Sunday, the team said. He was 68.

The cause of death was not immediately known, but various health problems had limited Caray to calling only Braves home games this season.

"We've all lost a very good friend," Braves manager Bobby Cox said. "For me, he was a good buddy — at the park and away from the park. We always had a lot of great laughs. He will be very sorely missed."

Caray was drawn into broadcasting by his father, Harry, the longtime voice of the Chicago Cubs and a member of the National Baseball Hall of Fame.

The family line has continued with two of Skip Caray's sons. Chip Caray is part of the Braves broadcast team and Josh Caray is working on the radio for the Class A Rome Braves.

While his father was known for his declarations of "Holy Cow," Skip Caray was able to declare "Braves Win! Braves Win!" with regularity as the team won 14 consecutive division titles beginning in 1991 and the 1995 World Series.

"Our baseball community has lost a legend today," Braves president John Schuerholz said. "The Braves family and Braves fans everywhere will sadly miss him. Our thoughts are with his wife Paula and his children."

Caray and Pete Van Wieren have been broadcasting Braves games since 1976. Caray's sarcastic wit made him a popular lead voice of the broadcast team, and his fame grew nationally as TBS carried Braves games to a national audience for 30 years.

After decades of calling the Braves America's Team, TBS this year began a seven-year contract of national weekly telecasts, leaving the Braves to the regional Peachtree TV network — and leaving Caray to radio work on home games.

Health problems also cut into Caray's workload.

Caray said this year he was battling diabetes, congestive heart failure, an irregular heartbeat and reduced kidney and liver functions.

"I almost died in October (2007)," Caray told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution at the Braves' 2008 home opener.

Still, Caray's death came as a shock, even to those who worked closely with him.

"He's had some medical issues but you're never ready for something like this," longtime TBS producer Glenn Diamond said Sunday night. "We're all very shocked by the timing. It's a very sad day for family and for Braves fans. I think the Braves fans feel they're part of Skip's family."

Caray, a St. Louis native, started in local radio and later joined his father at the University of Missouri calling football.

He joined the St. Louis Hawks NBA broadcasting team and followed them to Atlanta in 1968. He was added to the Braves broadcast team in 1976.

Caray and Van Wieren were inducted into the Braves Hall of Fame in 2005. Caray was named Georgia sportscaster of the year six times.

"He had a huge impact on a lot of people's lives and he had a huge impact on my life," Diamond said. "During the season we spent more time together than we did with our families and our lives."

Caray is survived by his wife and four children.

The Braves said funeral arrangements will be announced later.

I could only imagine the call that you and Pete would've made when the Braves won the World Series back in '21. You and Pete are both missed by Braves fans all over the country. RIP

It's been 11 years and it seems that his voice is still calling a baseball game somewhere somehow. I never met Skip in person as radio & TV always seemed so personal.

My best to all the Carey's as your lives go on.

God Bless,

Skip and the crew converted my father-in-law, a big Cincinnati Reds fan, to the Braves in the 80's. I grew up with the Braves from age 9 in 1957 but my being a fan of the team became really special during those years with Skip and
the broadcast crew. Skip kept fans watching boring games because you just couldn't wait to hear what he would say next. My favorite one-liner of his during exciting games is "This game would make coffee nervous".
In my lifetime.....greatest of all time. Period.

I miss Skip too, and I can't tell you how much all the kind comments mean to me, his sister, and the rest of the family. I don't know why I never saw these comments before, but they surely put a contented smile on my face. Thanks for your appreciation. He was a great guy.

In Atlanta Braves were Americas'team...
and thanks to Skip,Ernie and Pete and
the way they announced the games, as
if it was on radio, I learned all the
things I never knew about baseball.
I'm sure other fans will remember my
favorite Skip Caray moment when Al
Hrabosky was on the mound with about
ten balls all over the field thrown
to him by the umpire and Skip waiting
breathlessly like the rest of us said
"I just hope he doesn't ask for another
ball". One of the funniest baseball
moments ever. Yeah, they were the
good old days...and I miss them.

Great memories of Skip given during tonights Braves/Giants game (8/3/2015). The late 70's/ early 80's may not have been the Golden Age of the Braves baseball (some really bad teams), but it was the Golden Age of Braves broadcasting with Skip, Ernie, and Pete. I miss all three very very much.

One of the funniest lines I ever heard by a baseball commentator was Skip commenting after David Justice hit a pop up a mile high over home plate. Skip said, "Folks, that wouldn't have been a homerun in a telephone booth." You are missed Mr. Caray. Thanks for the awesome memories.

Skip Caray will always be a part of the cherished memories I have of becoming an Atlanta Braves fan way back in 1982. He was a treasure, and I will always be grateful that Skip, Pete, and Ernie made those early days of watching the Braves so memorable (even if the teams were struggling mightily). Thanks for the insight, enthusiasm, and terrific wit. "Braves Win! Braves Win! " The entire Atlanta Brave nation won the moment Skip Caray began his career with the Braves. God bless you, Skip!

Skip, I was really young but remember you when I sat in front the television and watched the Atlanta Braves. I remember your voice and how you brought so much excitement to the game. I started my career in law enforcement in 2000 and I remember on the days I had to work I would tell my wife to record the game with Skip doing the broadcast. You will always be missed and may God bless you and your family!

I chased Skip down in the Candlestick parking lot to tell him one day I would have his job... I really looked up to him -- I loved the Braves and wanted to be a professional sports broadcaster, mostly because of him. He said he hoped I was right about having that job someday and autographed my hat. He was so nice to me, some psycho fan running after him and yelling his name. All of the Braves players were coming onto the bus with all of the fans yelling for them, but I only wanted to meet Skip and was so ecstatic that I was able to. I'm no longer a Braves fan, but I will never get rid of that autographed hat. I miss you, Skip... thank you for your kindness and entertainment over the years. Rest easy.

Started listening to Skip when he was at his best, the radio voice of the Hawks on WSB. He called great games involving Lou Hudson, Joe Caldwell, Jim Washington, etc. He was simply outstanding as a basketball play-play man. Great guy, like Mark Holtz, play-by-play man for the Texas Rangers, left us way too early. Rest in peace Skip, we miss you.

I used to go to Braves games regularly, and still bring a handheld radio just to hear him call the games. Many a night I would stay up and listen to the broadcasts on the radio of the games. For me, he was the reason I got interested in baseball and started to pay attention to the Braves. Thank you so much Mr. Caray.

I wanted to take the time as Skip's daughter to thank you for all of the beautiful messages, words of encouragement, and fond memories you shared. My dad was wondeful in so many ways. He was very much off air the way he was on air-to the point and so much fun!To many he was an icon. To me, simply my Dad. I never knew the impact and joy he gave to so many. To say I am proud of him is an understatement. He was and sill is my hero.
Thank you all for your love, support and wll wishes.

August 1, 2009

I can remember watching the Braves on cable for years when that was all there was other than network, the Braves weren't very good, and Skip's snappy comments made the whole think one of the best TV shows around. He once announced that a Falcons player had been traded or something like that. Long pause. Then he said, "Of course I'm kidding. I just wanted to see if you were still paying attention." Later he said the station was getting flooded with calls asking if the report was true. Anyway, I spent years listening to H. Caray as a Cardinals fan and many years listening to S. Caray as a Skip fan. One of the best ever.

Skip was always there growing up. As a child I sat happily on my Granddaddy's lap and learned the game, listening to Skip call it for better or worse. All thought school, college, having the broadcast on studying for exams, he was always there bringing humor and interest to the great game of baseball. I moved to Philadelphia and have thoroughly enjoyed listening to the great Harry Kalas call the Phils. But to this Atlanta born gal, Skip will always be the true voice of baseball.

The Braves will never be the same. Skip's loss is huge to ALL Braves fans, and I will miss him soooo much! Thankfully, we got to hear him a few times this year, for which I am very grateful. I LOVED his humor! Actually, the Braves haven't been the same since TBS started deleting the Braves and their wonderful announcers about 3 years ago. I hope so much that the love so very many people had for Skip will make your grief easier to bear.

Skip will always be with us because those of us who grew up with him in Atlanta will never forget his special brand of wit and how entertaining he made the games even when they were really bad. I will really miss him most because whenever I listened to him call a game it gave me that warm feeling of remembering my dad and granddad listening to him and Ernie call a game and how they always said baseball was best by radio. Skip you were truly indeed an unique personality here in Atlanta. I grew up watching breathing and living baseball. My dad didn't watch any sports but baseball. He started working part time at Atlanta Stadium when I was 8 years old. It was years and years before "security" was an issue and me and my sister roamed all over. I know you knew my Dad and my Sister. She grew up and started working for Ted Turner and was in the box office for years. She is now at Philips Arena and surely knew you well too. You were a special friend of the family.

One question. Who can possibly call a Braves game like Skip? No one!! No offense, but there will never be another like Skip. TBS made a grave mistake when they canned the Braves games because we all looked forward to them no matter where we were in any part of the country because of Skip. We could always count on Skip giving it to us straight if nobody else did, and nobody has since. Skip, may you find rest in that great stadium in the sky. I look forward to hearing you call 'em like you see 'em....all good.
Skip wins...Skip wins...Skip wins!!!

Our deepest sympathy to the Caray family, and Skip's friends and colleagues. He will be sorely missed. We're grateful for the many years Skip "joined us in our living room" as we watched the Boys of Summer. We enjoyed his Choptalk column too. His knowledge educated us, and his wit brought us so much laughter. We'll have to be satisfied with looking at his bobblehead, complete with microphone. Now he'll always have the best seat in the house.

Godspeed, Mr. Caray.

God Bless the Caray family. Listening to the games won't be the same.
