Slaton Smith Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 10, 2015.
Slaton Sharp Smith passed away Wednesday, April 8, 2015, at Nacogdoches Medical Center surrounded by family and friends. He was 45 years of age. Services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday, April 11, 2015, at the First Baptist Church in Nacogdoches. Visitation will be held from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. today at the church. Interment will be at the Sunset Memorial Park. Slaton was born in Nacogdoches, Nacogdoches County, Texas. His parents were Dr. Robert Aaron and Susan Smith. Slaton was a graduate of Nacogdoches High School and received his degree from Texas A&M University with a Bachelor of Science. Professionally, he was an entrepreneur and served as regional representative for a major orthopedic surgical equipment company. Slaton was married for 20 years to his high school sweetheart, the former Robin Pantalion. Their marriage was a true example of love, devotion, and in the best sense of the word, a partnership. They have three outstanding sons, Samuel Gunnar Smith, Jake Pantalion Smith and Robert Aaron Augustus Smith, all of Nacogdoches County, Texas. No father ever possessed more pride and love than Slaton when it came to his boys. Slaton was a friend to all who knew him and he had a profound impact on his community; particularly the young people he encountered. He never met a stranger and his strength of character and quick wit made all who encountered him better for the exchange. Slaton served in many leadership capacities including, but not limited, to the following: commissioner for the Nacogdoches Baseball Association, president of the Pineywoods Football League, and serving as coach of literally dozens of basketball, baseball and little league football teams. As a coach, he served as a true mentor to hundreds of children. Slaton also served as a past president of the Nacogdoches Jaycees Club, a former member of the Nacogdoches Rotary Club, president of the Quarterback Club at Nacogdoches High School, a member of the Masonic Lodge and holder of the prestigious political office of Nacogdoches County Public Weigher. Slaton's charitable involvements are too numerous to fully list, however, it should be noted that he served as president of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon Chapter at Texas A&M University and while serving in that capacity was the founder of Chili Fest â€" a fundraising event whose annual attendance now exceeds 40,000 and from which has been raised literally millions of dollars for various charities, including the Boys & Girls Club. Slaton's positive impact on others was, remains, and will continue to be substantial. Several academic scholarships, as well as a foundation, have been established in his name and the Boys and Girls Club of East Texas has named its new football complex in his honor. Slaton's faith was unwavering and he lived by the maxim that God is first, family is second and work is third, and if you live life in that order all other things will fall into place. Slaton's long and courageous fight against cancer served as a model of how to live life to the fullest and make the most of each day God grants us. The love and support of Robin along with the courage exhibited by Gunnar, Jake and Gus, sustained and uplifted Slaton through this battle and helped lead him to the victory he has now attained. Slaton is survived by his wife, Robin; and three sons, all of Nacogdoches County, Texas. He is also survived by his brother, Shannon Lee Smith and wife, Marcie, and their two sons, Benjamin Parker Smith and Andrew Grayson Smith of Nacogdoches, Texas; as well as his aunt, Dr. Barbara Carol Smith of Huntsville, Texas. Slaton is also survived by his stepmother, Vida Smith Raney of Nacogdoches, Texas. He is survived additionally by his sister-in-law, Angie Pantalion Webb and her husband, Duncan, and their sons, Hayden and Blake Webb. Slaton was preceded in death by his father, Dr. Robert Aaron Smith; and mother, Susan Sharp Smith. Slaton was also preceded in death by his grandparents, who included paternal grandmother, Barbara Cross Smith Arwood. Pallbearers are Matt Cox, Randy Leonhardt, Drew Pierce, Rex Perry, John Green and Jeff Davis. Honorary pallbearers are Dr. Craig Sessions, Jay Elms, Dr. Mike Randle, Mike Hebert, Dr. Dan Fuentes, Nick Spencer, Duncan Webb and Gary Russell. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations either be made to the Slaton Smith Scholarship at the Nacogdoches High School Alumni Association; or the Slaton Smith Foundation, created for the benefit of the Nacogdoches Boys and Girls Club in c/o Shannon Smith, 4635 NE Stallings Drive, Suite 101, Nacogdoches, Texas 75965. Slaton Smith and the Smith family were friends to so many. I remember first meeting Slaton in 6th grade (even though his dad was our dentist forever). He, Stephen Saunders and I all sat in the back row in History. One day during class Slaton asked if my eyelashes were real. I said of course. Next thing I knew when I was writing Slaton leaned over and pulled my eyelashes. I think my eyelid was pulled of my eyeball about an inch. I looked at him and he said they are real!!!! hahaha. He was a funny guy and made that horrible History class fun.
Slaton and Robin are beautiful loving people and it hurts me so much to know that this happened to this family. God be with all of them during this time and know there are so many people covering you with prayer and love and thoughts.
Slaton Sharp Smith you touched so many people in this world with so much kindness and blessings. You are liked and loved by so many!!! You made people laugh, you were nice to EVERYONE!! You encouraged, accepted everyone the way they were, you were honest and the definition of a true friend.
Thank you for being a friend to me and being one of a kind!!

When I think of SIaton I can't help but smile. He would always say "Well hi there Helenstarr..." never just Helen, and with that twang in his voice I couldn't help but laugh. I really don't remember NOT knowing Slaton. We met in elementary school, I believe in Kindergarten. We lived close to each other and had many a summers playing outside together. He was such a great kid and that never changed, even in the teen years!!! Not Slaton, true blue till the end. He was the real deal, you knew there were no pretenses with him. He was kind to everyone, accepted everyone and in return everyone liked him. The more I look back the more he reminds me of his mother Susan. I knew her briefly , and she was a wonderful and sweet woman and always made me feel special. To say he was special is an understatement. There will never be another Slaton Sharp Smith. I feel so blessed to have known him and shared part of my memories with him. I will miss him dearly, and my prayers go out to Robin and their three beautiful boys.

We are so saddened for Robin and the boys and we express our deepest sympathies. Slaton was simply a good man with a big heart who had a positive and faith based approach to life. I remember sharing that with him and how empowering his life is to others and for me. In true form and humbleness, Slaton simply said thank you. He enriched so many with his examples of courage and faith. He provided his sons with a foundation of manhood that can never be matched. May God bless his soul and welcome him to his Kingdom. Love and Prayers always.

We are lifting your family in prayer. Slaton exhibited such passion in life and such strength throughout his struggle. He has provided an example to us all of living life to the fullest and sharing all of your gifts with those around you. He touched many lives, but none were as beautiful to him as Robin, Gunnar, Jake, and Gus. Remember all he taught you, boys. Know that he loved each of you dearly.
