Sonny was a great mentor, gifted athlete, legendary coach, and role model. His kindness, strength, and generosity left a lasting imprint on my life and the lives of so many others. His leadership at JCCC summer sports camps was exceptional, inspiring countless young people through baseball and basketball. As a caring counselor, Sonny was there for kids and people in need, including at the former South Park school in Merriam and the Special Olympics. Sonny worked closely with my mom, Virginia, and brother Fred, helping to build and grow remarkable JCCC from the ground up-that continues to shape lives thanks to his vision and heart. My brother Jeff and I keep Edna, Alvin, Che´rell, and family in our thoughts and prayers.

One of the blessings of my life was the privilege of knowing Sonny and Edna and the joy of being their friend. The entire community has suffered a great loss. My wife Judy and I extend our deepest sympathy to Edna and her entire family.

Unfortunately, I only knew Sonny in his final moments. I was his patient care tech at the hospital he stayed in. I immediately bonded with him! He shared with me his legacy, achievements, family, and his favorite subject, his love for the sports teams he founded. I will never forget that no matter his medical circumstance, he always managed to light up the room and put a smile on everyone´s faces! I always looked forward to going into his room to chat with him. I care for many patients a day, but Sonny is a patient I will NEVER forget. My thoughts and prayers goes out to his beautiful family, who along with him was always so optimistic and sweet.
With love,
~ Olivia, PCT PCU

JCCC is grateful for Coach's leadership as a trailblazer to help make the College what it is today. My sincere condolences to the entire Maynard family. My father loved playing for him - I know Coach's legacy will live on through all the student-athletes he impacted. Rest in Peace, Coach.

Soony was the finest man I ever met. We played basketball and softball together. I now look back over the 50 plus years I knew him. Those precious memories will not leave me until my life ends. What a privilege it has been for me to have had him as a friend.

Sonny was a good friend and a great Christian man. He was an excellent counselor and was always good visiting with students. He was humble, kind, compassionate, positive, funny and was a great listener. His faith in Christ was so important to him and he showed the same love for people that he received from Jesus. Special prayers for Sonny, Edna and family during this time of mourning and loss.

I was blessed to have worked with Sonny in the JCCC Counseling Center for many years. I so admired his inner strength and humility. Sonny also had a great sense of humor and loved telling stories that made everyone laugh. I knew about the racism he faced in his younger years but he rose above it. I know he helped countless numbers of students at the college during his many years there. It was always a good day to see him after he retired. He was an icon. Peace be with Edna and their family.

Played senior basketball with Sonny for years. He was a genuine and unique individual and was well liked by all of us fortunate enough to know him. He was easy to talk to and always found some good in all situations. I feel fortunate to call Sonny my friend. May he rest in peace and God bless him and his family.

Our condolences to the Maynard family, the year of knowing Sonny was one great one for sure. Buying our first home was scary but it was always nice living next to the best neighbors taught me so much about my yard and loved my little girls like his own. You will truly be missed!
