It was with sadness that I heard of Stan's death. He was such a good lifetime friend of Dick Cowan, a friendship he valued beyond all others.
He will be missed.

Dear Janet, Jennifer and Family.
I was so sad to learn of the passing of your wonderful Dad. I always remember his charming, infectious laugh. He seemed so delighted with life and with his kids. I hope you are all able to take some peace in knowing that how much he loved you and how much joy you brought him.
Love,

I first met Stan in the early 1970s at a CCO camera club meeting at the old NRC building on Sussex Drive. This was shortly after moving from Montreal. Perhaps I should say instead that 'Stan met me' as he greeted me warmly at the door and welcomed me to the camera club - which, as many have noted, was simply an extension of Stan. It was to be the finest welcoming to Ottawa that I had received. It was also a warm welcoming to the world of photography. Stan's love of photography was infectious - and I was duly infected by Stan as were many other aspiring photographers. I will miss his good cheer, encouragement, and love of life.

My sincere condolences to the Metcalfe family.
I just realized that it wasn't through primary school when I first met Mr. Metcalfe; that it was actually at the 4th Avenue Baptist Church when I was about 4. Once Jennifer, Janet and I became pals in school I remember being picked up by Mr. Metcalfe in his Mercedes (the first I ever rode in) and being whisked off to pool parties at the Metcalfe house. Great memories that I haven't forgotten.
Sorry again to hear about the family's loss.

Laura, Derek, Janet, Jennifer, Mich and all you little ones. Well you know my feelings for all of you...I love you all to bits as I did Stan. He was a wonderful, charming gracious man. I don't think that he had ever had a bad day that I know of.
I will miss his phone calls and blessings. He lit up many a dull day for me. Such a kind and thoughtful person.
You were all so very lucky to have had him as your mentor and your husband for so many years Laura.
Stan enriched our lives with unconditional love and inspiration.
Oh to have one more song with him....Danny Boy.
Love to all of you. You are all special to me and I will miss Stan's presence but as is true with all Saints, his spirit will live on through all of you.
Love and Blessings to all of you.
Carol....Aunty Carol to some of you little dear hearts.

Dear Laura and family - we are so sad to hear this news... and send our condolences. Stan will be missed by many many people. He knew what is important in life. I will always cherish the frequent, delightful phone messages he left for us, just letting us know he was thinking of us here in Kodiak. Stan had a knack for spreading joy and love wherever he went and whosever lives he touched. He will not be forgotten.

Dear Laura: I was deeply saddened to learn of Stan's passing. We want to extend our deepest sympathy to you, Derek, Janet and Jennifer.
Stan was certainly 'one of a kind', so full of enjoyment of life, even when illness was talking its toll.
Stan and I go back many (probably close to 70 years), starting as Cubs at St. Giles Church, then on to 4th Avenue Baptist Church as Scouts and then as an assistant Scouter in the 42nd Sea Hawks. At our wedding, Stan was an attendant. After we moved to Barrie, Ontario, in 1957, Stan and I communicated regularly. When he called to speak to me, always referring to me as "J.C.", he had to first talk to Ruth and he was generous to her with compliments. Our conversations generally generated to "Scouting", along the lines of "remember when" and "Do you recall". I am so glad we were able to visit with you and Stan when we were in Ottawa this past March. We will certainly miss Stan and his phone calls.

Stan had an infectious smile and cared deeply for people. He would visit my husband Fred Torrington (a former CCO member) regularly during his years of illness and at each visit, our home would radiate with his enthusiasm, great sense of humour and compassion. A born orator, he spoke at the funeral service with his usual grasp of what is truly important in life. He honoured Fred and that's the reason I loved Stan. Our lives were enriched because Stan believed passionately about the important things in life - love what you do, love people and give of yourself wholeheartedly.
My deepest sympathy to my dear Laura and family.

I too was greeted by Stan when I first joined the Camera Club (1988). With a warm, hand clasping handshake and a great smile, he introduced me to the other members. I loved when he was at the front of the room. Whether he was showing us some interesting equipment (where did he get that stuff?), telling stories or introducing a special guest, he always did it with fun and enthusiasm. We will continue to tell our stories, our favourite Stan Stories, and marvel at the impact he had on so many people about all that he held dear to his heart.

I , like many others in the CCO who knew Stan, thought of him as the heart and soul of our club. When he left after 46 years as an active member of our club, it was as if a vital component of our club was suddenly missing. Stan's love for life, for photography, for good food, especially sweets, and most of all for the people in his life will forever be remembered by those who had the very good fortune to know him. Our lose is heaven's gain. God speed my friend.

Laura and family,
I'm so glad I had the opportunity to spend some time with you all in Canada last year. I only regret that I couldn't visit more often.
Stan, a truly amazing person, had the same love of life and family that Grandma Booth did. His warmth, kindness, and sense of humor were truly an inspiration to me, and I will miss him more than words can say.

Laura, and family;
When I was a young fellow, in the Sea Scouts of Canada, Stan was our "Skipper".
Stan helped us to be proud of ourselves. He led us to respect others, and at the same time, respect ourselves.
As Skipper or scout master of the 42nd Ottawa; Stan showed us how to be "The Best". We were proud of our "Ship". We were proud to be wearing our uniforms, and with our "Scarlet and Gold" scarves, bell bottoms, and proper caps for each season. Oh how I look back on those days with pride and happiness.
Each year, Stan and I have had a little contest. He even tried to cheat a little.....
The contest was to try to be the first to call the other on our birthday. We were both June the 15th, lads, and enjoyed the common "Hatch Day".
Stan tried calling the day before, but finally realised that was "cheating...!!"
.....but he did "Get" me many times.
This past June, I got him, but then, I called during his nap time. He called the next day, and we had our usual great chat.
Next June, it won't be the same. Birthdays will have a very vacant feeling to them, without Stan's call, or his voice on the other end.
I'll think of Stan often....I'll never forget the man that helped me, start out in life, with pride and respect.

Laura;
I am so glad I talked to Stan two weeks ago. He sounded "great" and he was happy to hear from me. We go back many years knowing the families. He was one of a kind. He was always there for anyone; either giving advice or helping out. He will be greatly missed by his church family as well as his community. He is now with Bart and Jack. He's looking down on "us".

If the Camera Club of Ottawa had a reputation as a friendly place (which it did), this was largely due to Stan who always had a warm greeting, especially for newcomers. And what a fine memory for names! He was an inspiration.

When I joined the camera Club of Ottawa a few years ago it was obvious that Stan was a force to be reckoned with. His absence from the club in recent years due to illness was noticed. His memory will live on in the Metcalfe Award.
A quotation I've always thought appropriate for photographers is this: "For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face . . . "

Stan was my friend for 40 years, he will live on in my heart and mind.
Stan was evangelical in his love of photography, however I wish he had shown more of his wonderful photographs. That doesn't diminish the fact as a teacher he turned on countless numbers to photography and to the CCO. He was generous to a fault, my early years he went out of his way to ensure I got home from the CCO meetings by driving me home to Alta Vista/Pleasant Park. Even though he lived in Crystal Beach.
To Laura Derek, Janet and Jennifer. I can't even imagine the gap that he'll leave in your lives. My deepest sympathies to you all.
Stan may there always be Kodachrome in your Leica. The Camera Club of Ottawa won't be the same.

What can I say? Stan was one of a kind. Stan was evangelical in his love of photography. I have been a friend of Stan for 40 years, and he never ceased to amaze me. His mind was sharp, his quick wit, and that mischievous twinkle in his eyes. Stan will be missed deeply, by all. I will miss him, as he was a true friend.
To Laura Derek, Janet and Jennifer. I offer my deepest condolences, remember the fun of life that Stan always showed.

I will never forget Stan. I was a member of the Camera Club for many years and was privileged to be included in many a lesson taught to us in his home and at the Club. He most certainly had a joi de vivre and always came with an ear to ear smile on his face. Thank you Stan for all that you gave to us as novice photographers. Maureen Cook
