I wasn't going to sign the guest book, I thought it would be too emotional for me. But, after reading all the wonderful tributes to my brother, I had to write my sentiments also. Stan, you were my older brother, but the ten years between us was never a factor in our relationship....we were so close, more so since John and I moved to FL to be near you. Well, Colonel, I am now still following your orders, I am doing as you instructed regarding your cremains, and your estate. Big job, even though you were so organized. In April, we will gather at your favorite golf club and dedicate your ashes to your favorite hole. Your pastor will be there and your Pro, many of the family, your neighbor Ralph and your golf buddies. It will be a happy ceremony because it is as you wanted it to be. You are so missed Stan, it has been four weeks since you left us. You are still in our hearts. Your best friend Ralph is still there for you. What a wonderful man. Take care my brother and know we love you and miss you so much. The twins are still praying for you. Your loving sister Dorothy and your brother (not in-law) John.

I must echo what most people have eluded to in their cards/messages.
We all met Lt. Nodland as 18 and 19 old kids, most of us away from home for the very first time.
Though Lt Nodland was only 6-7 years older than most of us it became apparent that he was not like the gung-ho officers we were all used to. This is when our lives changed for the better. Some of our guys worked directly for Lt Nodland. Many of us wished we could. No hidden agenda, just do your job the way your supposed to. He was a straight shooter and was there for us if we needed anything.
Most of us left military service after 2-3 years. It wasn't until 1995, some 37 years later that we got together for our first ever reunion. We hadn't seen one another since leaving Germany.
Two of our officers in Germany have attended our reunions. After all the years our Lt Nodland became Stan and we all became his friends again, but, in a different way.
Stan drove all the way to our 9th reunion in Cape May, NJ this past October. He told us he was in good health! He wasn't!
We will sure miss you Stan. You sure helped a bunch of kids mature and learn what life was all about, and, we all had lots of fun doing it.
But then, you know that!
Your guys from the 22nd and 656th Engineer Topographic Battallion.

Dear Uncle Stan, rest in peace and finally breathe easy. You will always be a part of our lives. Our memories of you will bring a smile every day. We will miss your smile, teddy bear hugs and that laugh. Moving to Jacksonville 10 years ago brought us closer than ever before and it has been our honor to spend all those great times together. Thank you for being you and touching our hearts. You will be a with us every day for the rest of our time here. We miss you and love you, and are grateful that you will be watching over us. Hugs and kisses.

Beth and I first met my cousin Stan thousands of miles away during the July, 2005 Nodland Family reunion in Norway. His dynamic personality captured our hearts and mind with his quick wit and strong will. He left such an impression on us, we were led to find our retirement home close to him, Dorothy and John. We shared many dinners, glasses of wine, laughs and prayers - in Norweigan - in the short time we knew him. Our last dinner with him will always remind us of the wonderful times we shared with him. He will be greatly missed.

Dick remembers Stan of course from his Army connections. But we both remember Stan mostly from the last reunion in Cape May. We spent some time together trying to check in at the hotel. It seemed like we went through a life time of experiences as we chat and waited. Maybe that's what it's all about. We don't know. Our sympathy goes out to you.

In life there are only a very few people that make a major impact on your life and Stan, you are truly one of those few people. Not only were you the greatest boss, you was a mentor, councilor, best friend and stand-in father figure after the lost of my own father. I'll miss all the lunch dates, you going out to dinner with Wanda and me, your joking personality and most importantly, you forever friendship. I appreciated your honest approach to life and the counciling advice you gave me in times when I truly needed someone who cared. I thank the Lord for the promise of eternal life through Christ and know in my heart that you are healthier now than you have ever been. It's my pray that you know who much you have meant to me and Wanda during our brief time together. Rest in peace, Love You, Junior & Wanda

Although I did not know Stanley for a very long time, it was very easy for me to figure out the kind of person he was. A very generous caring man who loved life, family, friends, golf and ice cream. A very proud man to have served his country, the city of Jacksonville Beach and for being of Norwegian descent. I regret not getting to know him better. Suffer no more Stan....

Stan was a neighbor of mine. He became a very good and trusted friend and often offered excellent advice. I golfed with him on a few occasions but never will approach his level of skill. My family will miss him dearly but will always be able to cherish his memory. Dinner at my house anytime Stan. Love Ralph, Barb and family.

Goodbye to a fellow Engineer and Golfer, and an old friend. It was always a pleasure to greet Stan and share a story or two that usually brought that characteristic smile to his face. I'll surely miss that.

I express my deepest sympathy to the family.

Stanley...I will miss you. You were a caring and loving "big brother" to your sister Dot, my sister-in-law. You were all about family.. your wonderful grins and hugs will be missed. I am glad you did not have to suffer anymore than you did. Rest in peace and when we meet again, we can play a round of golf with the angels.

Mr. Nodland was a true leader, friend, co-worker and an inspiration to many of the citizens of Jacksonville Beach. What seemed to matter most to him was to change the things that needed changing, rearrange the things that needed to be, and treat his employees and the citizens with respect and appreciation. I will miss your "Hey Girl" greetings and smiles. But for now, your march is over and your life's journey has ended. You are now in His arms. May you rest in peace.

We are deeply saddened to hear of Stan's passing.
As tournament director of the Armed Forces Memorial Golf Classic, in Merritt Island, Fl, was where my wife and I first met Stan. He was a super nice gentleman, and really loved the game of golf. He came in Nov 2007, but was not physically able to play, it was a pleasure to have him. When he left he said I will see you next year.
We will miss Stan very much. I am sure that many who played with Stan over the years will miss him greatly.

As a lieutenant in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, I served with Lt. Colonel Stan Nodland in the Berlin Brigade in the late 60's. As a matter of fact, he promoted me to Captain in November of 1969.
I remained closely in touch with Stan over the years as a close friend.
A great guy in every way, a role model for many, a man's man, and all-around good person, Stan Nodland will be missed by all who knew him.
Farewell Colonel Nodland!

I knew Stan professionally when he had the responsibility to approve projects for which I was the project manager. Stan was an engaging, consummate professional who will be missed by the Jacksonville Engineering community

I am saddened to hear about Stan Nodland. I worked directly under him as Engineering Technician while he was Director of Public Works for Jacksonville Beach. He was a shaker and a mover. Of his many accomplishments, the main one that directly affected me and my community, is that he is credited for paving all the dirt roads in Jax. Beach; which at that time were most of them.
He was firm, but fair. I was very blessed he took me under his wing many times, helping me. He taught me, guided me, and cared for me and my family. I have the upmost respect for Stan. He will be truly missed by my family.

Mr.Nodland was an inspiring role model and mentor in engineering who significantly influenced both my career and approach to life. He was always so full of life and concerned with serving other people through engineering solutions. I think of him often and am grateful to have known him.

Mr. Nodland hired me on at the City of Jacksonville Beach Public Works Department in 1991, where I am still employed. I had the privilege of working with him for several years before he retired. He was a great boss and even better friend. Another co-worker and I went to visit him a couple of weeks ago and he still greeted us with his wonderful smile and cheerful spirit. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family. Mr. Nodland will be missed!

Remember

Remember me when I am gone away,
Gone far away into the silent land;
When you can no more hold me by the hand,
Nor I half turn to go yet turning stay.
Remember me when no more day by day
You tell me of our future that you plann'd:
Only remember me; you understand
It will be late to counsel then or pray.
Yet if you should forget me for a while
And afterwards remember, do not grieve:
For if the darkness and corruption leave
A vestige of the thoughts that once I had,
Better by far you should forget and smile
Than that you should remember and be sad.
