Startle Barnes Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 30, 2025.
(Startle) Don Barnes was born in 1943 in Oskaloosa, IA, an only child of "Toots" and Jackie Barnes. Graduating from high school in 1961, he excelled in athletics earning 13 varsity letters. Continuing his love of sports, he made the college golf team at Northeast Missouri State in Kirksville. After receiving his BA and MA, he went on to earn his Specialist Degree from Iowa State University. Patriotically, he entered the Army in 1968, where, in Vietnam, he quickly earned a promotion to Staff Sergeant. After receiving many medals, and then being struck by lightning, he returned home in 1970. His time in uniform remained a source of pride all his life. Don inspired countless students during his 30 years teaching elementary PE and coaching various high school sports. In 1992 he married his high school sweetheart, Pamela Nuckolls Peterson. A devoted father to Chad and Ben Barnes and loving stepfather to Todd and Chad Pembroke, his great joy came from his role as "Grandpa Don" and "Papa" to his 10 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and stepson, Chad Pembroke. The world has lost one of the kindest, most giving, sensitive men. A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, March 8 at 2:00 PM at his home: 2000 SE 28th Lane, Ocala. All are welcome.
