KANE, Stephan Patrick Commander (Ret.) age 59, of Kailua, Hawaii, passed away March 3rd at Tripler Medical Center in Hawaii. He was preceded in death by his mother, Eleanor H. Kane. He is survived by his loving wife Katherine Klein who is one of eight siblings of Marge and Bud Klein of Dayton. He is also survived by his sons Stephan Patrick Kane II, Kevin Joseph, and daughter Mary Claire Kane; his father Lieutenant Colonel (Ret.) William J. Kane A.U.S. of Dayton; cousins Diane Salinger of Los Angeles, Elaine Salinger D.V.M. of San Francisco, and Susan Samualsin of Long Island. Also colonel (Ret.) Francis J Kane and his five children, Dr. Joseph A. Helfrich, D.D.S of West Chester, PA and his three children, and many children of his extended family. Stephan graduated from Chaminade High School, Dayton, in 1970. He was a member of the National Honor Society and a member of the State Championship basketball team of 1970. He was operations officer of the 2nd Regiment. Stephan earned the History Sword as top history graduate at the Academy. He was permanent chairman of the Crest and Ring committee of his class. Upon graduation, Stephan entered the Nuclear Submarine Service. He performed nine ballistic missile patrols and numerous attack patrols during his more that twelve years at sea. Stephan's staff assignments were Sub group eight, Naples; Chief of Naval Operations, Washington, D.C.; and commander of Naval Command Pacific in Hawaii. Stephan retired after twenty years of honorable service. His service honors included Joint Distinguished Service medal, two Naval Distinguished medals, Military service medal, and several other lower awards and medals. He was awarded the Dolphin combat patrol and Sub patrol pins. He was once introduced by his loving mother, Eleanor, "This is Stephan, our son, of whom we are most proud." A Memorial Mass will be held Saturday, March 19th at 11a.m., St. Henry Catholic Church, 6696 Springboro Pike, Dayton, Ohio. Visitation will be held one hour prior to service. Luncheon immediately following service. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Stephan's name to the Boy Scouts, Miami Valley Council, 4999 Northcutt Place, Dayton, Ohio 45414.

We only met Stephan once on the occasion of Stephan being the best man at our brother's wedding in Blountville TN. Thank you Stephan for your service to your country. Our heart felt condolences to Katherine and Stephan's family. Sailor rest your oar.
