Stephen Bresnahan Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 29, 2019.
Dr. Stephen Leo Bresnahan, age 63, of Milton passed away on June 25, 2019, after a courageous and graceful 3 month battle with a glioblastoma brain tumor. Stephen was a graduate of Boston College High School (1974),The College of the Holy Cross (1978) and University of Massachusetts Medical School (1982). He completed his residency at University Hospital in Boston in 1985 and went on to practice internal medicine and geriatrics in the greater Brockton area for over 30 years. He was a dedicated staff member of the Caritas Good Samaritan Medical Center and served as Medical Director at several health care facilities. He has been nominated by the Massachusetts Medical Society as the 2019 Physician of the Year. He was beloved by his patients and colleagues and will be remembered for his professional humility, gentle disposition, kindness and compassion. In 2008, Dr. Bresnahan undertook his first volunteer medical trip to rural Haiti with the Saint Rock Haiti Foundation. With his wife and 3 children, he traveled regularly to Haiti and was beloved by his Haitian colleagues and patients. Eventually Dr. Bresnahan became a member of the Board of Directors of the foundation. He served as the Chair of the Clinical Practice Committee that ensured exemplary care was provided by U.S. practitioners in collaboration with the Haitian staff. He was also a member of the Building Hope Committee that is overseeing the development and construction of an expanded healthcare facility that will better serve this community. Above all, Dr. Bresnahan was deeply devoted to his family and expansive community of friends. The support and love expressed during his brief illness was symbolic of this devotion and the life of service to others that was the foundation of all his actions. Dr. Bresnahan was predeceased by his parents, Leo and Marie (Devlin) Bresnahan. He is survived by his adoring wife of 32 years, Dr. Jocelyn Bresnahan; and his cherished children, Hope and future son-in-law Agbi Bajrushi, Sophie and future son-in-law Jackson MacDonald, Gabriel "Gabe" and Lourdina Chery, formerly of Haiti, and whom he called his own. He will always be a cherished son-in-law, brother, uncle, friend and colleague to many. The family would like to sincerely thank Dr. Daniel Cagney, Rachel Silverman RN and the skilled technicians at the Radiation Oncology Department of the Brigham & Women's Hospital (BWH), Dr. Omar Arnaout of BWH department of Neurosurgery and Dr. Patrick Wen and staff at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute. In his final days his family was assisted in tenderly caring for him at home by the Norwell VNA Hospice team. In lieu of flowers, please consider a gift to the Saint Rock Haiti Foundation to ensure that Dr. Bresnahan's hard work and dedication will keep moving forward. A year has passed and I still think of Dr. B often. It is a testament to his character as a person, never mind a doctor, that so many are still so profoundly affected by his loss. Additionally, I have met so many people over the last year that were associated with Dr. B in one way or another and the common thread is always about his kindness and compassion. We all will miss him for as long as we are here on this plane of existence.

Ive known "Dr Steve" as I called him for 25 years, when i was changing doctors.

I was immediately drawn to him by his quiet, calm, caring demeanor. Always concerned about the total picture, your family and overall well-bieng. There are very very few men in this world with this type of peaceful kind spirit.

We are so sorry for the family and friends. Find comfort in your personal memories and know how lucky we all were to have him, and know him.

Rest in Peace Dr Steve.

I am deeply saddened to hear of Dr Bresnahan's passing. He was my primary care physician for well over 30 years, since his practice in Whitman. He has helped me manage my health with his caring, compassionate yet no nonsense demeanor, always telling me how it is and what I needed to do to manage my condition, always with a smile. I wish every doctor was more like him. I shall miss him.

July 10, 2019

Dr. Bresnahan was both a colleague and a physician. He was a compassionate and caring person who took the time to listen to your needs and even went so far as to always inquire as to how other members in the family were doing. Our hearts goes out to Jocelyn and the family at this difficult time. Dr. Bresnahan will truly be missed.

I am so sorry for your loss. He was such a warm and compassionate human being. I met Dr. Bresnahan at the emergency room over 30 years ago. I had a bleeding ulcer. A year or so later when I got insurance I selected him as my primary care physician. When I went for my first office visit he remembered me and why I was treated. I was amazed that a Dr. as busy as he was remembered one night in an emergency room. He always treated me and I am sure others as if they were the only patient in his office. He took the time to ask about your wellbeing. I am honored to donate to his charity. Love and prayers for all.

After seeing Steve at a St. Rock event or hearing my wife Lisa's stories about how he led and managed Haiti trips and the medical clinic, or how he interacted with patients and volunteers and staff, how he exuded compassion, competence, and natural leadership, and took positive, definitive action in a calm and reassuring way, I would comment to Lisa without fail every time, "That guy is simply the definition of a truly good and exceptional man." He was an inspiration and Lisa and I wish peace and send our love to Jocelyn and family.

Dear Jocelyn:

I was saddened and shocked to hear about Steve. We were colleagues from the time he first practiced in the area in Abington and then later when we were neighbors at One Pearl, when we got to see each other regularly until our departure in 2008. I always admired him for being so thoughtful, calm, kind and considerate and for how he really cared about his patients. He was really my ideal as a primary care physician. Sad that Steve won't be at the 2 weddings, but his love and spirit will be with you and the kids always. Anne also sends her heartfelt condolences.

The news of Dr.Bresnahan's passing was so devastating to our family and our condolences go out to Jocelyn and his children and family. Dr. Bresnahan has been my doctor and my husbands doctor for over 30 years and our 2 children just recently joined the practice and was very comfortable with his care. I would always go with my husband to his visits and he always took the time to talk to us both and show to us that he really cared for our health and well-being. He never made us feel that we were just a patient bc he always would ask about what was going on in our lives and would talk with us about his kids and our kids and just life in general. He always had a smile and his warmth showed through his disposition. We will miss him dearly and I hope his legacy as the brilliant man that he was continues on. Our prayers and love to you Jocelyn and your children and please stay that strong women that you are because Stephen would want you to carry on his legacy and what he has achieved throughout his career. May he Rest In Peace. Condolences and prayers. Love Stephen and Judi Donahue and family.

The first thing one noticed about Steve was his physical height. That physical height, however, was quickly dwarfed by his medical knowledge, his caring and his compassion for his patients. That's what truly made him the giant that he was. I knew him as a colleague, a friend, a fellow dad and, thus, saw his utilization of that genius first hand in different venues. A unique opportunity came for me when he cared for my 90+ year old mother several years ago. I saw his knowledge and compassion first hand. I watched and listened in amazement how he so skillfully outlined her medical options, made sure that she understood them and then compassionately enabled her to make her decision. That interaction served as a beacon to me as how to truly care for patients. And his last act of gifting his body to science is both extraordinary and yet so typical of the man. He had to be tall because those kind of talents and the expert utilization of them couldn't have possibly fit into a mere 6 foot frame. Rest in peace Steve with a job amazingly well done.

Dr Bresnahan was our Wonderful Dr for over 25 years he was the best Dr we ever had. He treated me and my husband with such respect he made you always feel like you where more than his patient but a friend. Dr Bresnahan helped me through the loss of my mother. I asked him what should I do when my mother was so ill they wanted to give her a feeding tube I asked his opinion he told me Lock the door block them from getting in don't ever prolong her life that way. I never forgot his compassion when I had a scare when a mass was found in my colon . He said thanks for the Teamster Insurance we had to have found it before it was cancer. He was always there to listen and he was the most compasionate man they don't make Dr's like that anymore. I remember he was so happy having a baby girl when I saw him he said her name was Hope I told him I loved that name. Our thoughts and prayers are with his Wife and family Me and my husband Max where so Lucky to have him as our Primary Care Physician.Dr Bresnahan watched over us for so many years. Now its his turn for God to watch over him. All our Thoughts Always June&Max Hewett

I worked with Dr.Bresnahan many years ago at Baypointe Rehab. He was our Medical Director for our subacute unit. He was well respected and always took as long as necessary to make sure the patient and family understood his plan. He was also very respectful of the staff and was always ready to give the staff an explanation. He was generous with his time and was a pleasure to work with. My aunt actually became his patient at my suggestion as well. I remember him being excited that his girls were in the Immersion Program at their elementary school. Dear Jocelyn,

It was with deep sorrow that I came across the news of the sad demise of your husband, Dr. Steve. This letter is to convey my heartfelt condolence and profound sympathy.

Although I did not have the chance to spend a lot of time with him, I have found that his personality and passion to help the most vulnerable were beyond comparison. He will sorely be missed particularly in the way he used to take care of people with love and compassion. The Saint Rock community and the entire community of Carrefour will remember him for his commitment to elevate the overall health status of so many of our Haitian brothers and sisters.

Again, I extend my deepest sympathies to you, your family, and the entire SRHF team during this period of mourning. Take solace in the fact that the Lord will give you the strength you need to sail through this hard situation.

In sympathy,

I'm so sorry to hear of his passing. He was truly a compassionate doctor who tended with understanding of all his patients. He took excellent care of my mother until her passing in 1995. I had the privilege of working with Stephen for ten years. I have never met a better and more compassionate physician nor a finer human being. Stephen was tireless in his drive to improve the health of his patients and others as one can see with his mission work. When he covered my patients, I knew they were in exceptional hands. He also adored his wonderful wife and children. Finally, Stephen exuded such equanimity, despite all the pressures of a practicing physician
Stephen had a tremendous influence on me. I will miss him dearly and am so very sorry.

Jocelyn and Family, I don't have the words to adequately honor Dr Bresnahan. My family and I are truly heartbroken. He was honestly the kindest, most compassionate person I've ever known. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

Dear Jocelyn,
The world is a darker place today with the loss of your wonderful husband. For so many years I could not find a physician who made me feel like my health, both physical and mental, was their first priority. Then I met Dr. Stephen Bresnahan. He was everything you could hope for and more. I always felt like I was his only patient as he spent time with me discussing my health, our families, experiences and interests. It never felt like a doctor's appointment, but more like a visit with a friend who cared about every aspect of your well being. He knew I was a Star Wars fan and could not wait to tell me about your trip to Ireland for his 60th, including the fact that you had stayed in the same house as Mark Hamill while he was in the process of shooting Episode VII. His passing is akin to losing a close friend and confidant. The letter stating that he was ill was truly disturbing and his loss is devastating. I will pray for him, you and your entire family both now and for the rest of my life. I am a better person both physically and mentally because of his care.
