Stephen DUNN Obituary

Published by Calgary Herald on Jun. 17, 2012.
DUNN, Stephen R.
July 7, 1923 - June 14, 2012
It is with deep sadness that the family of Steve Dunn announces that he passed away on Thursday, June 14, 2012 at the age of 88; his passing was peaceful and he was surrounded by his entire family. Steve was born in Fort Macleod, Alberta in 1923. He is survived by his wife Elizabeth; and his four children, Steve, Maureen May (Bruce), Brent (Kathy), Sandra Kinnon (Tony). He will also be greatly missed by his seven grandchildren, Megan, Marianne, Alexandra, Rebecca, Sean, Scott and Amy. Steve was a veteran of World War II where he served as a pilot and a navigator. Steve briefly studied architecture at the University of Winnipeg before deciding to pursue his living as a Trader on the Calgary Stock Exchange. This experience started a lifetime fascination with the stock markets. Steve eventually left the exchange to strike out on his own in the oil & gas industry. He formed a couple of successful small oil & gas companies. In the early 80's Steve became interested in oil extraction from the oilsands. He was co- inventor of a process that he continued to champion until shortly before his death. Steve was an avid hiker and particularly loved the Kananaskis Valley both as a place to hike as well as golf. He was a skilled hockey player, playing pick-up games until his late fifties and enjoyed strenuous four wall handball games until his early sixties. One of Steve's proudest moments was a hike he undertook to the floor of the Grand Canyon at the age of 75. Steve was a champion bridge player and competed at a very high level where he and his partner John Lange won a major tournament at the masters level. He developed many wonderful friendships around bridge, and really enjoyed playing at many Calgary area clubs over the decades. Steve was very proud of all of his children and grandchildren and it was one of his biggest wishes that his grandchildren would always dare to dream big and pursue their dreams. A Celebration of Steve's Life will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY'S, Chapel of the Bells (2720 Centre Street North) on Saturday, June 23, 2012 at 10:30 a.m. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. Our
family would like to thank the staff of the Colonel Belcher for their wonderful compassionate care. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly
to the Calgary Poppy Fund and Veteran's Food Bank, #1, 4539 – 6th Street N.E., Calgary, AB T2E 3Z6; Telephone: (403) 265-6304, www.calgarypoppyfund.com or to the Royal Canadian Legion, www.legion.ca.
In living memory of Stephen Dunn, a tree will be planted at Big Hill Springs Park Cochrane.

Maureen, Bruce, Alex and Becky - you are in our thoughts and hearts as you mourn the loss of your dad and grandfather. We know that you enjoyed a close relationship and that you will miss him very much. He lived a full and varied life, and I know he had a lot of fun along the way. What a great legacy for you, his loved ones.
