Stephen MENDRYK Obituary
With deep sorrow, we announce the passing of an inspired educator, an exceptional athlete and a truly authentic human being. On November 17, 2011, Stephen Warren Mendryk bravely departed, at the age of 83, following a lengthy battle with congestive heart failure.
Born in Edmonton, Steve soon demonstrated athletic prowess playing on championship teams in baseball and hockey; playing on the Golden Bears Basketball and Wrestling teams; and as an Edmonton Eskimo when the team achieved Grey Cup victories in 1954, 1955 and 1956. He won the Wilson Challenge Trophy for Most Outstanding Male Athlete (1952/3) and was inducted into the Edmonton and University's Sports Halls of Fame and, as a team member, into the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame. Academically, Steve followed his passion for sport by receiving a Masters degree (Berkeley) and Ph. D. (Oregon) in Physical Education. During this time, he also became a Professor at the U of A where he taught, conducted research, wrote over 50 scientific articles, volunteered on many committees, coached and mentored graduate students for nearly 30 years. Steve also loved to golf and build houses and helped his children with their homes.
Steve is survived by his wife, Jeanne, daughters, Marlene (Bob) and Michele (Greg), son, Wayne, four grandchildren and four sisters. A Celebration of Steve's amazing life will take place on Thursday, November 24th at 1:00 p.m. at Sturgeon Valley Baptist Church, 51 Woodlands Road, St. Albert. In lieu of flowers, please direct contributions to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

I only just heard of this sad news. Dr. Mendryk was my advisor as a Masters student at the University of Alberta in the mid 70's, He was truly inspirational to me and has been and will continue to be a guiding light for me. Thank you Jeanne for sharing him with me. He will be sorely missed.

Dear Michele and Family,
My thoughts are with you on such a sad occasion. I am truly sorry to hear of your loss. I have such wonderful memories of hanging out at your house, your family was always so great to be around. I am surprised that your Mom and Dad let us conduct those experiments in the basement, surprisingly we never did blow up the house. The loss of a Husband, Dad and Grandfather is a very hard experience, remember he will always be in the hearts of those lives he touched.

Jeanne, Sincerest sympathy to you and your family. I have great memories of early morning golf games with you and Steve at the Derrick. Steve's dedication and contributions to the PE Faculty and students at the U of A were

Dear Jeanne, our sincere sympathies to you and your family. We're in Vancouver for Grey Cup and just read the notice in today's Globe and Mail. Had just given Steve's name to a fellow who is writing a history of sports in Edmonton and so it is another loss to that project as well as your and our personal loss. So very sorry to have this news
