Stephen Metz Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 29, 2025.
Stephen "Steve" Eric Metz of Wake Forest, NC passed away at home January 25, 2025, after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 72.

Steve was a devoted husband to Janet, proud father to Sarah (Jason) Ipock and Matthew Metz (partner Reneé Klecka) and beloved "Papa" to his grandchildren Reagan, Seth, and Harper Ipock. He was the eldest son of the late Donald Billie Metz and Ruth Adele Wilson, and a loving brother to Doug (Polly) Metz, Marcy (the late Larry) Hayes, Tori (the late Ed) Reinke, and Chris Metz. He is also survived by his sister-in- laws Nancy Smith and Joyce Sheppard (Steve Neiheisel), many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Steve was born September 17, 1952 in Arlington, VA, but soon after, his family relocated to Cincinnati, Ohio, where he spent his childhood. Following high school, he proudly served in the U.S. Coast Guard for four years. In 1974, he married Janet, and they started their life together in Cincinnati. Their journey eventually led them to Raleigh, NC, in 1983, where they settled and built a life. Upon retirement, Steve and Janet moved to Wake Forest, NC, accompanied by his cherished dog, Buddy.

Steve began his career working for the Kenton County Police Department in Kentucky before going to work for IBM, where he was a project manager for 33 years. After retiring, he pursued part-time work, finding joy in delivering luxury cars for local dealerships.

Steve had a zest for life and a deep love for adventure. He loved riding motorcycles, his favorite affectionately known as the "H2omeln." Road trips with Janet on the back and his HOG buddies by his side brought him immense happiness.

He was an active and respected member of the Raleigh Harley Owners Group, where he served as the Director for many years. He led numerous charity rides for cancer awareness and organized an annual Toys for Tots gift drive. Shopping for children's toys was something he looked forward to each year. Steve also enjoyed collecting and repairing hundreds of children's bicycles to donate to families in need.

A man of simple pleasures, Steve was rarely seen without his signature cigar in hand, often paired with a rare Kentucky bourbon. He also enjoyed a round of golf with his friends and brothers every chance he got. His warmth, humor, and selfless spirit left an indelible mark on everyone who knew him.

Celebrations of life are being planned in his honor. A local gathering will be held at Norse Brewing in Wake Forest, NC, on March 29 from 11-2, followed by a celebration in Northern Kentucky on June 14.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Steve's memory to the Marine Corps Toys for Tots or Wake County SPCA.

Janet, I pray that you and your family will be encouraged by the fact that Steve was loved by many people. His generous spirit, friendly attitude, and willingness to help endeared him to lots of us. May focusing on the wonderful memories you shared help to ease the heart ache you feel, and may you feel the love that is coming your way during this time of grief.

My dearest thoughts to you, Janet, Sarah, and Matthew and all of your loved ones. While we were next door neighbors for 13+years, we became more than just borrowing a cup of sugar or some eggs. Steve was a soft soul inside a sturdy physique. He was the first in the cul-de-sac to lend a helping hand, a listening ear in the driveway, join an "amusing" chase for wayward dogs, and share stories. We laughed for years at his nickname, "Nightmare" because it was the farthest from the truth. He was a giver both behind the scenes and in front of the camera. May you all be comforted and strengthened by precious memories and
each other. Fondly, Lynn

My favorite memory: going w/ him and Janet to see Joe Bonamassa in concert. Great music, great people, togetherness. The picture is from that night: March 22, 2022 He was always joking, always kind and affectionate. My condolences to Janet and family and friends

one of the fondest of Memories, was the America's 9/11 Ride - back in August of 2006 ... Fred / Purple / Steve & Janet / OB - rode from Raleigh, NC to Somerset, PA to meet up with ~ 1,800 other riders ... Starting in the little town of Shanksville, PA and riding to the Flight 93 crash site ... from there, with a totally Police Escort, went to Washington DC and the Pentagon ~ 2,000 plus bikes ... the next day, was the trip to Ground Zero - over 2,500 bikes rolled thru the Holland Tunnels, down West Street, to the Battery, and parked at the Twin Towers site. all of Lower Manhattan came to a complete stop !!! NEVER FORGET - It Starts With Me !!!
