Vicki - I will miss Steve.
It seems like yesterday I and my dad and that year my mom met you and Steve at David od'Kennedy's house for a meeting of Eastover. It was May of 1991 and Mr. Kennedy instantly made Steve Road Commissioner, taking over from Richard Stark who had sold his home to you.
Mr. Kennedy was a well known sailor and his wife Phyllis was a donator to Olympic figure skaters including Peggy Fleming. They had lived on Eastover since 1948, and owned Kentile floor products in Brooklyn along with what has since become it's landmark neon sign. Mr. Kennedy always kept the job as Secretary-Treasurer giving away the President's and Vice-President's job to others. In 1992 Mr. Kennedy made Steve Secretary Treasurer, probably the most important position in Eastover, but as I well know, a relatively thankless position which he did with aplomb and alacrity for the next 30 years.
He was responsible for removing dying 100 year old trees at the entrance and replacing them as well as re-doing the 100 year old entrance gates. From time to time I would help, especially in the winter when he was in Florida to check the roads for snowplowing in Eastover. Being treasurer also made you the actual road commissioner as you had to contract and pay the snow plow man.
I was honored when he asked me to follow in his footsteps.
I'm glad I got to see him one last time and talk with him when you were still on Long Island. I am sorry you and Steve never made it back together to walk Eastover Beach.

I knew Steve through his love of tennis and billiards. We enjoyed hundreds of late Monday afternoon doubles tennis matches together for almost two decades at the Creek and many evenings of "competitive" billiards at his home - the billiards were just an excuse to enjoy good food and wine together among good friends. A wonderful man without an evil bone in his body gone too soon. Hannah joins me in sending loving condolences to Vicki and family.

Steve was instrumental in hiring me at First Boston in 1985 and we covered banks in the Midwest together. Loved his sense of humor and I learned so much from him about finance M&A and how to work with clients. I remember driving around the Midwest and coming up with a rating system for grading barns. Great guy. Still have a momento he gave me on my shelf. All the best to Vicki and the family.

Sending love and blessings to the Murphy family. Uncle Steve was full of love and hugs. He was an unbelievable cook and I have wonderful memories of family holidays on Long Island.
