STEPHEN WATERHOUSE

That during his lifetime a man would create useful and lasting benefits to serve not only his own contemporaries but a totally anonymous posterity is as solid a testimony to his enduring humanity and faith in the worth of future generations as any marble statue or granite monument. One needed but to be aware of Steve's accomplishments in life to know that he was deserving of either of these memorials, and one needed but to be acquainted with the man himself at some meaningful level to know that he coveted neither. May he always be remembered for the practical good that he did and be an inspiration to others to try to do as much in their turn. Steve was a man who left many legacies to Dartmouth. His work with the Rauner Library will endure for decades to come and benefit thousands of present and future researchers from near and far. His work in rebuilding and modernizing the Class of 1965 Cabin at Mt. Moosilauke has finally made possible its year-round occupation for hikers, skiers and others, a benefit that should endure as long as the new Ravine Lodge itself. His 300-page book on 50 years of some of the College's most dedicated alumni--each a living legacy in his or her own time--stands as a unique memorial to those whose allegiance to The Big Green did not end upon graduation.
But perhaps his most ambitious legacy was in piecing together the widely fragmented and previously obscure story of Dartmouth's singularly pivotal and enduring role in the development and expansion of competitive and recreational skiing in the US and elsewhere with his 400-page book covering 100 years of leadership, innovation and achievement. Nationally acclaimed for its scope and contribution to the history of skiing, it was followed up with an Emmy-nominated full-length film that added vintage and current footage to the book's basic theme and content, including original interviews with key figures from various decades.
As volunteer editor of his ski history book, it was my privilege and pleasure to work closely with Steve over some two and one half years of sharing our various discoveries, recruitments, successes and frustrations. This man, whom I had never even met or heard of before (subsequently doing so only once), had so impressed me with his enthusiasm for and confidence in this undertaking that I signed on with hardly a second thought. During those challenging and productive years, we corresponded--solely by email--on every aspect of every chapter and annex, reviewing and revising the articles of the more than fifty contributing authors, most of them alumni, to bring Steve's visionary project to publication by Winter Carnival of 2010, the one hundredth anniversary of the founding of the Dartmouth Outing Club. That book is a unique tribute to the DOC and the College from one of her most dedicated and thoughtful alumni. Inasmuch as he still had much to give and more to accomplish, Steve's too early loss is as immeasurable as his hopes for his alma mater's continued preeminence were innumerable.
The College has lost a devoted friend, and his friends have lost a valued colleague.

Linda and Waterhouse family. It was with sadness that I learned of Steve's passing. Hard not to think back to the classes freshman year, the Indian at the Football games and the many many events at SigEp. I worked with Steve, first on the Book, Passion to Ski and then on the Documentary, Passion For Snow. He was such a force in preserving Dartmouth's History. I worked extensively at Rauner Special Collections Library, knowing the driving force behind its creation was the same man making the Book and Movie on Dartmouth's Winter traditions possible. Steve was such a positive inspiration infecting all around him with his vision and enthusiasm. It was a honor to know and work with him. His works will always keep his spirit alive.

Steve:
You will be sorely missed as a great friend and a tireless supporter and promoter of Dartmouth and CarniVail. It will never be the same. We were deeply distressed by your isolation this past year, but understand the stress of your health. God bless!

A great contributor to our class and College - who made a difference

I remember Steve from our freshman year in Middle Fair-weather and enjoyed communicating with him regarding his wonderful contribution, "Passion for Skiing." He will be missed by all his Dartmouth friends.
