Stephen Wootton Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 6, 2014.
Steve Wootton, 68, resident of Henderson area, passed away on April 4, 2014 at the Nathan Adelson Hospice center after a bravely fought battle against Melanoma. He was born Stephen A. Wootton, July 8, 1945 in Southern California to Neville and Leah Wootton. In the early days he was known as "Stevie Wootton", a cute, freckle-faced child actor seen on various television series (including the Jack Benny Show, This is Alice, Superman, and I Love Lucy) and many motion pictures until his early teens. He attended University of Portland where he met his first wife, Judith Gregori and received his Bachelor of Arts in Communication in 1967. He and Judy were married in 1968. They had three children, Kimberley, Matthew and Timothy. The couple later divorced in 1979. Steve had a long career in insurance and management, starting at Allstate and later retiring from CNA in Chicago. While at CNA, he met his soul-mate, then Virginia Dickinson. The couple married July 21, 1990. About 10 years ago, Steve retired from his career in Chicago to the Henderson area to be closer to family in California and his brother and sister-in-law, Roger and Judy Wootton. Steve loved good wine, golf, watching sports, his family and his grandchildren who affectionately called him "Papa". He was well loved by his friends and colleagues and had a good joke for every occasion. He was generous and loving to all who knew him. He is survived by his wife Ginny; his brother Roger; his children Kim, Matt and Tim; his step-sons Jon and Jeffrey; and seven beautiful grandchildren they cherished together. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to the Melanoma Research Foundation (www.melanoma.org) or Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers (Fr. Joseph Fedora, M.M., Mission Account, Maryknoll, New York 10545 in Memory of Stephen Wootton). A memorial service will be held at 11:00am on Tuesday, April 15 at Palm Mortuary, 7600 S. Eastern Avenue, Las Vegas, Nevada. A reception to follow at Roger and Judy Wootton's.

My love to the entire family. I have had the blessing of knowing or at least meeting many of you and will always consider you family.
I deeply and sincerely saddened by this news, and will be thinking and praying for Ginny and all of you. I feel very lucky to have had Steve in my life, he made an impact in my life and I will never forget him.

Although it is with a heavy heart I say this I wanted to take the time to write down some things I remember about Steve, and how he touched my life. I tend to ramble but could not decide what to say so decided to say it all:
My favorite big memory with Steve was Lake Tahoe family trip for his birthday watching fireworks on the 4th of July. He told so many great stories about his childhood and about some of the projects he and Roger had worked on in CA and in Tahoe area helping build places, etc. He played a huge part in teaching me how to play poker that trip, with the patience of a saint. He set up tournaments for us, and we loved it. The scramble golf match he set up for us was amazing and taught me a lot of respect for the game he loved that looked so easy, and was more frustrating than almost anything I tried. He tried very hard to give me tips and help. That trip Steve got a photo printer for a gift, where he could not wait to print pictures of the grandkids. I was always touched by how much he really played with all of his grandkids. At the pool, tossing the ball, reading books, or anything they wanted to do. Cole always loved doing anything, even watching TV or just hanging out with Papa Steve. I remember watching him with the girls at thier house in Henderson pushing them on the swings too.
One of our many trips to Vegas I wanted to take Jon and Cole to the Hoover Dam and Cole and Jon were less than excited about my choice. It must have been 100 degrees that day and Steve and Ginny took us and supported the reasoning and the idea of going to see it. Steve had probably been there a million times, and he didn't even care. He said they would probably like it once they got there, and they did. I will never forget Cole running to the state line and how excited he was.
I remember all the great times of going to the local casino with Ginny and Steve and how much fun he was. He always made sure we had a great time. I remember him telling me about some of the traveling he and Ginny did and places they went. He explained that he wanted us all to have great experiences too, and always encouraged our travel. He created experiences for us by taking us all kinds of places, we shared great meals and conversation.
I always apprecaited his advice when it came to business, finances, and career too. I was never afraid to ask him about anything. Steve and Ginny taught us how to play pai gaw at their house so we could go to the casino and play, even if we didn't have a lot of money. What a blast we had. Steve even set up a pretend table to show us the whole thing.
There were many likable traits Steve had, however for me I will always admire him for the level of patience. After all the situations I saw him go through with kids, grandkids, or anything, I never heard him raise his voice or lose his temper.
When I first met Steve I was just about 21 when Jon and I started dating. He was geniune, kind, and very easy to talk to. I went over to thier house for dinner near Christmas and Steve introduced me to wine, Chardonay in particular. I always think of him when I drink wine. He taught us a lot about wine too. He had a way of explaining things so we could understand and not feel like it was too sophisticated or complicated for us. We had some fun bbq's at thier place in Woodridge watching all the birds off the back deck.
When we got our first place, Steve took us aside and asked us if we needed furniture. He offered to store the really cool big blue sectional they had, and we all loved; until we could move it into our place. We had that couch for years and Cole would sleep on the sofa bed with his Dad when he was over, it was perfect.
Just one of the many things he did for us like that.
He had a huge heart and I will never forget him. Cheers to you Steve, thank you for all you showed me and taught me. I love you. Your are physically gone, but your spirit will always be all around us. The world is not the same without you; but we do have lots of friends and family in heaven, this place with no pain and no worries. I know you are with all of them; and some day I will see you again.
