I had lost track of Steve until another old friend, Kelly Varnado called to tell me of his passing. The funeral home was so full I had to sit in one of the outer rooms and watch it on video.
Later, while discussing it with my wife Donna, she reminded me of a fishing trip that Steve, Kathy, Kelly, Linda, Donna, and I took to the Key Allegro house in Rockport. We caught a good many fish and collectively decided to have a fish fry - without the maids and cooks!
The big boss (Don) flew in, after hearing of the good fishing, and proceeded to take me to one of the back rooms to rip me a new one for sending the maids home. Little did we know that Kathy had been in that bathroom and hid in the bathtub behind the shower curtain while he chewed me out!
Long story short, Don left, we had a great fish fry and laughed all night at Kathy!
God's speed Steve!

Steve was more than our boss at Targa, he was our friend as well. There is no doubt that Steve cared about each one of us. I am so grateful to have known him and his wife Kathy who was the love of his life. There isn't a day that goes by that we don't think about or talk about Steve. I will never forget this wonderful, feisty, funny and kind man.

Steve was a remarkable guy and someone I've always respected and looked up to here at Targa. I will miss him. All the Hopson family will be in my prayers.

Kathy and Cindy,
Steve was a brother-in-law in name but more than that a best friend to me. We all had so many great times together rather it be fishing, vacationing or just visiting on the patio for hours. I already truly miss him and believe he lives on in each of us through our stories and memories. For as long as there are memories, they are in our hearts to stay.
Love you always Steve! Thanks for being the best friend ever!

The first time I laid eyes on Steve, he Mike Heim and I got into my car and drove to Lake Charles to perform due diligence on what would be the initial acquisition for Targa Resources. Steve's energy and efforts were critical in making this company successful. He was my team mate and partner and it breaks my heart to know he has left this world. Kathy, Cindy and the Hopson family, Please accept Ginny and my prayers for you and for Steve. I was very sad in December when I heard Steve had decided to retire, but nothing like when I heard he was very ill. Steve was a friend, a dedicated employee and the smartest engineer I know. I was blessed to have had the opportunity to work with him at Targa.

Hopson Family, Although no words can really help to ease the loss you bear, just know that you are very close in my thoughts and prayers.
It truly breaks my heart to know Steve is no longer with us. I had the pleasure of working for this wonderful person. In the year and a half that I worked with him, he taught me great lessons in work and in life in general. He was always jokester in my eyes but the best one was the one Brian, Seth, Elise and I had on him about the mints that were by my desk that he loved, so he always got his mints!
I remember he would come in my cube and talk to me or ask me a question about one thing and an hour later we are talking about well, who knows what conversation we would end up in. He made such a huge impact in many people's lives and hearts.
Steve, know that you are overwhelmed with so much love, very much respected and will be greatly missed. Rest Easy Boss Man.

Kathy & Cindy, May God give your Family comfort in your time of grief. My family extends to you our deepest condolences.

Aunt Kathy and Cindy,

We will laugh together about the good times and cry together when we're sad but most importantly we will be doing all this together!

All I keep hearing in my head is Uncle Steve saying "barracho'ed" as we all drank and had a good time together!

We love you guys!

To beautiful Kathy, Cindy and all the Hopson Family,

Days of thinking and still at a loss of words to express our sorrow. Steve was and will always be a wonderful man. Though not here with us now, he is now fishing and playing slots in heaven waiting to see everyone again. Please know that the 100+ of great exciting stories had his love for all of you pouring out. Through his rough exterior was a man that loved nothing more than his family and he always let that be known. Steve shuffled down the hallways in his leather jacket and boots telling me about the hard working people in his life and was never too big to praise those people for doing so much for him. Some people may have saw his harder exterior, but more got to experience the true John. I loved calling him John because 1) not many knew that was his name/ no one else called him that and 2) I felt like I was a lucky one who got to see the fun loving man that treated us like we were part of his family- separating such a great man's name was a must.

Kathy, thank you for all the time you had to sacrifice with Steve so he could work alongside of us- he always told you were an amazing woman to put up with all his travel during the decades of marriage. Through all his stories the golden bottom line was always you.

Our prayers will continue in hopes that smiles and rejoice will come sooner with the thoughts that he is with God; and that is the ultimate bliss we all hope to have. Please do not hesitate to call us if you ever need anything.

We are sending all of our love and hugs your way!

Steve- We love you and will see you again one day!

Kathy, Steve was not only my boss but one of my best friends. The period of my life during which we worked and spent time together were some of the best times in my professional career. Steve is one of only a very few men whose ethics, honesty and loyalty I believe to be above reproach. I say unashamedly, I loved him as a friend, I cannot believe he is gone, and I will miss him terribly. If there is anything Svetlana and I can ever do to help please do not hesitate to call.

Hopson Family,

We are deeply sorry for your loss and hope you find some peace and solace in your time of sorrow.

Steve was an amazing boss! He was one of the best and brightest in the business and his work will continue to live long after his passing. He hired the best minds and trusted them with their decisions. He took care of everyone that worked for him, both professionally and personally. He never held back on his views and always said what he meant unfiltered. A straight shooter, if I have ever known one!

He had a sense of humor that was unabashed and unparalleled, and his stories were a delight to hear.

The last I talked to him was at his retirement send off, he said something to David Scarborough and me, which coming from him, I hold to the highest regard and will never forget how dearly it means to me.

He will continue to live in the memories of the countless people he has influenced. He will be sincerely missed and our deepest condolences to everyone.

Dear Kathy and Cindy -

Friday afternoon we received the jolting news of Steve's passing while sitting at our desks at work. That evening, like many folks do these days, I posted something on Facebook in some attempt to tell Steve, and the world, just how much he meant to me. How I was not done knowing him. I want to share it here with you two because the rawness is still real.

I am heartbroken. My boss of 10 years passed away today. I often thanked him for all he had done for me. He'd always shrug..."I just opened the door [gesture big door open] and you just walked right on in." And I would say, "Yes. But you opened the door." I love you, Steve. And I am so grateful for all you did for me and my family. Thanks for opening that door.

Yesterday, Brett and I were talking in the office. And we both felt the loss of not being able to say good-bye. But Brett said it best. Steve lived a life where he didn't need to say good-bye. We all knew how he felt about us and us about him. What a perfect statement of the man he was.

Dan, Alicia, Kendall and I offer you both our deepest sympathy. May God hold you in his arms and provide you comfort.

Love, Jessica Keiser
