Steve Katcheves, 69, a resident of Annapolis for 54 years, died suddenly of natural causes Dec. 29, 2009 at Prince George's County Hospital Center.
Steve was born Sotirios Katcheves in Trikala, Greece on April 20, 1940, to the late Vasilios and Athena Katcheves. His father died at an early age and he and his mother emigrated to Annapolis when he was 15 years old.
Steve graduated from Annapolis High School, and then served in the United States Army, where he later served as a reservist.
Steve retired from the United States Postal Service in 1999. He enjoyed his years of retirement, spending more time with his family and, in particular, playing with his grandchildren.
He was an active member of the Saints Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church in Annapolis. He enjoyed spending time with his family, volunteering with his church, gardening, soccer and the Baltimore Ravens. He was well known by many for his outgoing, friendly and generous personality. He was a devoted husband and proud father.
In addition to his parents, Steve is preceded in death by his sister, Efthemia, who died in childhood.
He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Stella, whom he married in 1965; his children, Bill and Alexander Katcheves, both of Annapolis, and Athena Alexandrides of Davidsonville; his daughter-in law, Tina Katcheves; his son-in-law, Gregory Alexandrides; and his grandchildren, Sofie, Peter and Katie.
Friends are invited to Steve's Life Celebration from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 31 at the George P. Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 2 at Ss. Constantine & Helen Greek Orthodox Church, 2747 Riva Rd., Annapolis. Interment St. Demetrios Greek Cemetery.

Dear Stella & Family,I am so sorry to hear of Steve's passing. I worked with Steve at Severna Park for many years. He was always getting me to sell his raffle tickets. It's funny, when I had tickets to sell for my own purpose I was shy but when Steve asked me to do it I had no problem. He was a great guy and hard worker. And I always enjoyed working with him.
I offer my heartfelt Sympathy to all of you.
