As an art student in Pittsburgh, I worked a couple night a week at Zelda´s Greenhouse in the early 70s. Steve then hired me to paint murals and signage for Razzberry Rhino. Unfortunately, I have no photos but did enjoy the experience. RIP

What a sad event - I had returned to Pittsburgh to visit my parents and my mom had cut out Steve's obituary to show me. I worked at Bimbo's in Mt. Lebanon back in the early days and never knew working could be such fun. Steve was a huge part of that enjoyment. I will always remember his smile, which got even bigger when he was having a great night and the band was singing "We're in the Money." What a loss to this world but the night skies will be brighter because Steve's star will shine forever.

I am deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Froggy. I am returning from a trip and am sorry I was not able to pay my respects in person.
Steve Morris hired me as a waitress shortly after Froggy's opened. During my over six years working at Froggy's I was able to finance my entire college education. When I graduated from school and became a Pharmacist I soon found out that I would be taking a cut in pay from my waitressing job at Froggy's.
I have wonderful memories from my days at Froggy's. It became my second home and the staff were like family. Froggy played a huge part in creating this atmosphere. In addition to being charismatic, funny, and the best storyteller I have ever know, he had a heart of gold.
I will be forever grateful to Froggy Morris for taking a chance on a very young, naive girl who had never waitressed a day in her life. The life lessons I learned in that saloon will remain with me always.
May you rest in peace Steve Morris.

Oh, the happy, hilarious times at Bimbo's, starting in Oakland and growing into multiple locations. While working my way through school, I was one of the fortunate ones who danced on the bar in the original Bimbo's and moved on with the gang to Mt. Lebanon. Steve was our fearless, and ever entertaining leader in many of our antics from all night bowling to Sunday morning softball games. We were young, full of joy and mischief. I left the burg in 1979 but each visit back found me checking in with Steve, getting updates on 'the gang'. Truly a unique character, gone on to the next big adventure. My thoughts are with all the Morris clan.

i was, at best an aquaintance, of froggy.
he was a gentleman.
we talked of art, scrim-shaw, golf, and scotch.
we tippled in a few states, and we rented his house in the vineyard oft times.
i can't claim friendship, but i am proud that he'd "grrrwl" when we'd pass on the street.
cool fellow; i just wish that he were with us.

Randy,
It's a shame about the Frog. We were friends for 40 years. We started out together about 40 years ago. Anyone who is a true Pittsburgher knows the Frog. Thanks for the e-mail.

My deepest sympathies to the Morris family; he was a wonderful, warm person who died way too early, but led a full life. I went to Froggy's for about 20 years because of the warmth of the crowd (I swear he knew everyone there) and I really was profoundly affected by his charity work. It may be overstated, but God broke the mold when he made him. I was just glad that he always took the time to say hello to me (and every regular) and I am so sorry for your loss; but I'll always remember the good times I had and the warmth he generated to always have a packed crowd.

Too young and too important to so many to be gone so soon. My memories go back to Bimbo's Oakland as a waitress at 21 to Bimbos Mt. Lebanon to being a bartender at Zelda & the Rasberry Rhino. So many memories, so many interesting discussions about life and how to solve the world's problems. Best advise from Steve, "do the best job you can do and do it better then anyone before you". Time has past, but the memories will always remain thanks to Steve and Company. My deepest sympathies to the Morris family.

Pete rockwell, Jim Capizzi , Joe Litman, were walking along in heaven and they decided that they were always "working" doing good for the man in charge!!! they needed a place to loaf .... Of course they checked with Duffy, and of course he bellowed " we need a saloon up here in cloud land!!! At that moment the big guy "GOD" wanted to know what all the commotion was about... He listened to the guys and within moments had solved their problem. In a dark and quiet bedroom early in the a. m. Steve Morris pulled gently at his oxygen masked smiled and like a firefly in the summer night his soul went to be with many of his lifelong friends... The bar table will be made of white marble, the cigarettes will be the kind that cannot hurt you, the drinks the sweetest nectar that one could ever taste....

I worked at Froggy's for 2.5 years. I've always looked back fondly at my time there. It was my first steady job in Pittsburgh since moving from NY. If I didn't work there, I probably would not have stayed in PGH too long. There are several entries here from former customers--regulars who fit into a certain mold and were "Froggy's people". The same can be said for his employees. There was a certain atmosphere working there that was very enjoyable, and made me feel like I belonged -and Frog was a big part of it. I made several good friends there that I am still close to, and met my beautiful wife there(with whom I have 3 wonderful children). I don't know what my life would be like if it weren't for Froggy's, and I really don't want to know. My sincerest condolences to the entire Morris family from a proud "Frogger". Right now I'm sure Frog is looking down from the best seat in the house.

My Deepest sympathy to the Morris family. Steve was indeed one of a kind. Working for Steve at Bimbo's was the best working experience of my life. He sure knew how to have fun while making a living. As a boss, he instilled loyalty from his people like no one I have ever seen since. This is a sad day for me, but I hope it is a great one for Steve.

My sympathy to all of you. I met "Froggy" as a college student when I helped to take care of the plants at Zelda's His laugh and voice were often heard before he was seen. I am sure there's not much I can say that others have not, but one of my craziest memories was when he wanted us to use a toilet as a
planter at the r. rhino! Pittsburgh will not be the same without him.

Steve was a Pittsburgh icon. I was a regular in the early to mid-80's... Froggy's was the "prime time" stop. So many wonderful memories can be attributed to him and his knack for the blarney and fun. He will be deeply missed and always remembered by the many who graced the round table crew. My best wishes to Trish and the entire family.

Morris Family,
What a loss for you, for Pittsburgh and for the countless people he touched. How many times Steve and I would sit at the round table in mid afternoon discussing our businesses, the the future of Downtown, and particularly First Side. My family's restaurant, Piccolo Piccolo and Froggy's were the anchor hospitality spots in First Side, and we exchanged stories almost daily.
Not only a friend to all, a civic activist and a genuine caring man. He made an impact on everyone he met.
He will be missed and remembered. Please accept my heartfelt condolences.

I worked at the Raspberry Rhino and Froggy's because of Steve Morris. He was so nice to me and my family over the years. I became friends for a short while with Lindsay and John--partied at Bimbo's a few times, and hung out @ Zelda's. They moved away and I moved away, but Froggy would always fill me in on the family happenings on my trips home. My sister and I had a tradition every time I came to the Burg--we would go to Froggy's, sit at the bar, find Steve, remember old times, catch up on the latest, and get happy!!!
My thoughts are with you all--such a loss, and so young!!

My sympathies to all of Steve's family. He was one of those rare individuals who lived a 'larger than life' life. I first met Steve over 30 years ago when he lived up the street and I sometimes would babysit for Jeff and Reagan. I also got my first regular job working at Bimbo's when I was 16. I still have alot of good memories of that place. I also would visit Zelda's in Oakland while I was going to school at Pitt.
Thanks again Steve for the opportunities you provided.

Back in the 60's and 70's Steve and I had watering holes in Oakland and spent time together. One day he showed me his new business card, it said Steve "Froggy" Morris, GTM. I asked him what it ment. He said, "Get the Money". Boy, could he ever!! We remained friends through the years and regret his passing. Froggy will be remembered as a genuine bon vivant of Pittsburgh but I will remember him as one of great characters that lived and worked in Oakland. May he rest in peace.

The scene is this: God gets a call from the Pearly Gate Sentry Station. St. Peter is on the phone and he tells God that a guy showed up at The Gate, saying he was expected. He then told Peter how the Gatehouse should look and that he had only a few hours to get it into shape.
Peter said that the intruder proceeded through The Gate and headed directly to the Golf Club. Peter said that he did not know the intruder’s name and he asked God what action he should take.
God told Peter that the intruder was Froggy Morris and that, not only was he expected, but that the two of them had a tee off time of 11:30. God told Peter that, while they were playing 18, there should be plenty of time for him to implement The Frog’s Pearly Gate Sentry Station modification program. This was yet another example of the unselfish, unassuming, non-judgmental, unbiased and modest “Morris Effect.” Heaven’s 19th hole will never be the same.
Froggy Morris worked with diligence to assure that everyone was “just another satisfied customer. He easily assumed the role of Grand Poobah and made sure that the lawn ball was elevated to its proper level in American lifestyle. In his lifetime, he made being a sports fan a sport itself. His style, attitude and presence will be greatly missed by those of us who were fortunate enough to know him.

I had my Mom and Dad at Forbes Field. Dad's health had been the best. "Dad, we're leaving after 7 innings." "Why?" No response, lack of a response somewhat unappreciated. We were headed for Bimbos, sometime before I knew the Frog. I remember my parents eyes light up; what a weekend! Thanks, Frog, for a million memories & all your good work. You were unforgettable, an exceptionally special part of Pittsburgh, the Steeler nation, etc, etc. Kindest regards to one and all. Take care.

Reyn, Jeff, Regan and brother Jeff...man, what a loss. My deepest sympathy to you all. It is a great loss to me as I met Steve at Bimbo's before he became Froggy. We were room mates - he was a groomsman at my wedding (he snuck me a few shots that morning to calm my nerves) and he was my daughter's godfather. I could go on and on with stories but so can anyone else who knew Steve for more than ten minutes. I am grateful that our paths crossed, especially at an age when we were just learning what life was all about. It was a happy, happy time and Steve was the ringmaster of the circus. I'll bet that Steve would ask us to forget about his death and celebrate his life. Sorry pal, I can't help but miss you. Again, my deepest sympathy to his family.
