Steve Strangio, 64, passed away unexpectedly on March 15, 2025, in Virginia Beach, Virginia.

Born on May 22, 1960, in San Francisco, California, Steve grew up with a passion for athletics. He attended Mission San Jose High School, excelling as a runner and becoming tthe NCS and Northern California Cross Country and Track champion. His dedication to the sport continued at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, where he competed at the collegiate level and earned All-American honors in track. He also pursued his academic aspirations there, earning a Bachelor of Arts.

Beyond his personal achievements, Steve found his greatest joy in his family. He was a loving husband to Jill for 34 years. His favorite role was raising his sons, Matthew and Nicholas. He spent countless hours at the track and soccer field, supporting their endeavors and sharing in their passions. His devotion to his family was unwavering, and he cherished every moment spent with them.

He was the best neighbor and friend to everyone. He was always the first to offer help when anyone needed anything. He was very talented and could fix anything. He worked for 27 years for California Conservation Corps guiding thousands of young adult crews in construction, fire, energy, and natural resources. Steve will be missed by everyone who knew him.

Steve is survived by his beloved wife, Jill; his sons, Matthew and Nicholas; and his sister Liz. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Joan, and his brother, David.

A Memorial Mass and celebration of life will be held on April 6, 2025, at the Chapel of the North American Martyrs at Jesuit High School in Carmichael, California. The service will begin at 9:00 AM. So sorry to hear the news of Steve's passing. Steve was one of the best runners I ever had a chance to help coach. He always gave his best effort, and loved the sport. RIP Steve, you will be missed.

Sending my condolences to Liz, Jill, and the boys. My first coaching job was with Steve at MSJ HS in 1987or 88. I ran at American HS during the time Steve and Liz raced for MSJ. Steve was such a passionate person and coach and I was honored to coach beside him. Because of this great experience with Steve, I just retired from coaching 38 years. Thanks Steve for the inspiration to coach. RIP

I am so saddened to learn of Steve's passing. I have peripheral connections to the Strangios: Steve's father was my junior high P.E. teacher and cross country coach. And my first full-time job was as a sportswriter in Fremont, where I got to know Steve and Jill while covering the high school teams they coached. And, in my current role with Stanford Athletics, I've been blessed to watch Matt race many times -- including his stirring victory at the Stanford Invitational on Friday night -- and always while thinking of the Strangio family legacy. Rest in peace, Steve.

Steve was a reserved, humble man with a quiet strength about him. A great track and cross-country athlete. Such a nice guy. I was struck upon hearing of your loss. Cousin, Joe Strangio of Tucson.
