Steven Applebaum Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 10, 2025.
Dr. Steven "Steve" Applebaum, DO, passed away on April 2nd, 2025. He was born on August 24th, 1957, to Frank and Phyllis (nee Feldman) Applebaum, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was the second oldest of four children, with Ruth (Jules) Mermelstein being the eldest, Martin "Marty" (Cheryl) Applebaum (deceased March 2025) being the third child, and Marcia (Paul) Friend being the youngest.

Steve grew up in a science-focused environment, and he carried that into his early career as a software engineer. After his software engineer role, he knew that he wanted a challenge, so he decided to become a doctor. He made it through medical school, internships and residencies - a difficult feat that was even more impressive given that he was born hard of hearing in both ears.

He worked in family medicine before moving into work in urgent care. He was beloved by his patients for his compassion and dedication. And he was beloved by his coworkers for his willingness to help them, even going as far as to cut his own arm and allowing colleagues to practice their suturing skills on him.

When not at work he had a love of magic. He was "Dr. Mystic". He donated his time performing magic for children in the hospital around the holidays. He entertained family and friends at any gathering that he could bring his tricks to. He asked restaurants if he could walk around from table to table, performing tricks for patrons.

He also had a passion for running and he trained for marathons, He completed 6 in total in addition to an untold number of half marathons and other long races.

He loved his wife, Candice (nee Harrison), and his two children, Jason and Rachel. Some of his favorite times were spent at sports games with his family. He didn't particularly like sports, but he loved the excitement of spending time with his family.

Steve is survived by his wife Candice, and his children, Jason & Rachel, as well as his sisters Ruth and Marcia. Contributions in his memory may be sent to Doctors Without Borders or your local pet rescue.

I just heard today of Dr. Applebaum“s passing. My daughter always looked for him when we would visit the urgent care here/there as he was always so kind, made scary things (like a strep swab) "fun", always offered stickers and he was just a kind person. I so appreciated the way he practiced medicine and we were very saddened to hear this news. Rest in peace Dr. Applebaum, you will be missed. Praying for him and his family.
