Steven Bell Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 28, 2025.
Steven Joseph Bell 71, of Port O'Connor passed away June 27, 2025, surrounded by his family. He was born in Bryan/ College Station on July 25, 1953, to the late L'Roy Bell Sr. and Betty Bell. He graduated from Calhoun High School.

Steve loved the water. At a young age he could be seen sailing his boat in the canal using his mother's sheets as a sail.

Later he was known all along the coast for his sailing ability.

With his longtime childhood friend Timmy Whitaker, they participated and placed in many regattas.

One of Steve and Susie's favorite sailing trips was a 2-month trip from Mexico down to Belize and island hopping to Roatan Honduras.

His friend Gary Giesel remembered him as "a small-town crabber, illegal net fisherman who came to develop Shoalwater Boats starting in his pop's garage" in the early 80s. He continued to own and operate Shoalwater/ Bell Boats for over 40 years.

Steve was always mechanically inclined. Before he was old enough to drive, his dad jokingly told him he could have an old car if he could get it running. Not long after, he was shocked to hear the car start and take off.

The last several years he and Susie enjoyed spending time in their cabin in the mountains of Colorado.

Steve will be deeply missed and remembered for his love of family, music and laughter.

He is survived by his partner of 28 years Susan Hudler, brother L'Roy Bell (Liz) sister Shotsie Thumann, nieces Lisa Baumann, Denise Sandy, and Sabrina Bell nephews Matthew White, Brian Thumann and David Bell and several great nieces and nephews. He was proceeded in death by his son Steven (Bubba) Bell, sister Lynne Hearn, nephew Stanley Thumann Jr, great-nephew Robbie Dendy and parents.

Private services will be held by the family.

Donations can be made to hospice of South Texas or charity of your choice.

I'm really going to miss you and all the stories that you told me about POC, my family, and your family. I can't help but think that you are the lucky one right now to be at peace and you get to see all the loved ones now. Love you and miss you.

We had so many dreams and most of them included boats. We always had fun talking about places we wanted to go and sea. You did great, every time I sea a Shoalwater boat, and there are many, I will remember you. You made the Bell/ Hawes name prouder. May you always have fair winds and following seas.

Rocky Raby, James Harper and myself had some of our greatest life adventures with Steven from testing the race boat he built and sailing his "tub" , unsinkable sailboat up and down the canal to floundering together and using the famous Steven Bell knot on our common stringer one night, to our wildest one the night James and Shirley got married and Steve, Rocky and I took a walking tour around town after the reception that led to multiple county deputies searching for some reported `hippies´ disturbing the peace. We weren´t caught but it was a long night. I will miss you Steve and keep those memories close.

Rip Steve
I will always remember your bright eyes and mischievous smile. I am not sure if I ever did see you without a smile or a slight grin. Especially when you and Tim Whitaker were together. I still remember sailing with you guys and y'all thought it would be hilarious for Tim to jump on your boat and leave me alone on his so I "would have to learn how to sail," I was not very impressed with you two at the time. One of my favorite memories now,Haha. You will be greatly missed. I am sure you and Tim are sailing the skies together now.

I´m glad I was able to see Steve a little while ago. We always seem to pick up right where we left off after a gap of not seeing each other. I remember when we got his dads Vespa scooter running. We spent many hours cruising around POC. I´m go to miss him like I miss Tim Whittaker and too many other old friends.

My favorite memory of Steve was swimming at the Peninsula and I had Chase in my arms. He was about 2. The waves got bigger and bigger as we walked out into the waves. I looked at him, in a panic, and he gave me a look that said he had my back, if Chase got away from me. Good guy....
