Steven Burdett Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 13, 2023.
Steven Russell Burdett, beloved husband, father, brother, grandfather and friend, left this earth on Sunday, June 11, 2023 to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Steve was born on October 20, 1950, to JV and Marjorie Burdett in Lubbock, Texas. He grew up in a farming family in O'Donnell and later moved to Lamesa, TX, where he graduated high school in 1969. The Lord gifted him with great speed and athletic ability, which helped him excel in sports in high school through adulthood. In 1975, he completed his bachelor's degree at Texas State University. During his college years, Steve began his walk with Christ which determined the course of the rest of his life. This included beginning his courtship of Debbie Cantwell, who he grew up with in Lamesa. After dating for one year, they were married in 1975. Their 48 years of marriage have been an example of love and devotion to countless friends and family. Professionally, Steve had an entrepreneurial spirit and spent most of his career in the insurance business helping his clients and friends through difficult times.

Throughout his life, Steve had many passions, including Texas Tech athletics (sometimes obsessively), playing golf and spending time with his extensive number of friends, being on the water at Possum Kingdom Lake or in the mountains of Colorado. He especially loved traveling the world with his beloved wife, Debbie, and spending time with his children and three grandchildren whom he adored. Steve was always generous with his time and well known for his ability to ask questions and make everyone around him feel cared for and important. He would constantly strike up conversations with people whom he had never met before. Steve truly never met a stranger.

Steve's relationship with the Lord was foundational. He had an unwavering faith and trust in God through both great and challenging times. Steve and Debbie raised their children to love the Lord and they played an instrumental role in bringing Young Life to Weatherford in 1991, which helped lead countless kids to Christ. He served as a deacon at Trinity Bible Church, where he and Debbie have been members for over 20 years.

Steve is preceded in death by his parents JV and Marjorie Burdett. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Debbie Burdett; his son Brian Burdett and daughter Anna Grace; his daughter and son-in-law Brittany and Grant Irons and their sons Parker and Connor; his sister Sally and her son Brandon.

A memorial service will be held at North Side Baptist Church in Weatherford, Texas on Friday, June 16, 2023 at 10:00 a.m. to celebrate and honor Steve's life. The family will receive guests immediately following the ceremony at the church. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Fort Worth Young Life (AG528) for camp scholarships at https://younglife.org/give.

For those who are unable to attend Steve's service, it will be live streamed at http://webcast.funeralvue.com/events/viewer/89316.

I had the pleasure of meeting Steve in a professional setting and we immediately got a long. He was always very friendly and enjoyed talking about sports and other aspects of life. I know he was a man of faith by the way he carried himself and how he treated others. I was extremely saddened to hear of his loss and my thoughts and prayers go out to Debbie and the family.

Steve Burdett was a great friend to me and to our family. We grew up together.
Steve was special, liked and loved by all, a truly wonderful man. He shared his love with everyone that knew him, and gave all the credit to God. I hope that Debbie, Sally, and his family will find peace knowing the man that he was. He will be missed.

Steve has always made us feel like treasured friends. He was so kind, gentle, and listened in a way that you knew he really cared. Rick said he was one of the kindest, most thoughtful men he´s known, always inquiring about us and our family. Always a wonderful smile, putting others before himself.

Steve was one of those cousins you wish you could clone. We shared so many fond memories as a child . There were never enough shared moments.
Steve grew into one of the most remarkable men I have ever known. He committed his life into one of service and giving. If God had disciples like Steve, our world would be a much kinder and gentler world.
I will miss our one- on- one
conversations and his enveloping laugh. His outlook on life is the most positive I have ever known. My favorite statement he ever said to me was ," You know ,cuz, God is just letting us visit this world. When it is time, He will call us home." Now he can continue God's work in heaven.
My love goes to Debbie, his children and his sister, Sally.

Steve was a great friend for over sixty years. Our sincere condolences go to the entire Burdett family. Steve was a great friend, father, husband, grandfather who always represented his Christian faith in every walk of his life. After J. V. and Margie moved from Lamesa, he brought them back for my Dad´ s funeral service, because our families were such great friends. Steve will be greatly missed by all his family and friends, but we can all be greatful for his friendship and his dedication to his family, friends and his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

I am truly saddened and heartbroken to be temporarily separated from my good friend, Steve Burdett. I met Steve at a Sunday School function. One of my friends told me, "You´ve got to meet this guy. He is from West Texas and loves Texas Tech". That was in 1985 and we have been friends since then.

Steve was a great person to be around, and we could talk for hours. I made several trips with Steve to Lubbock to go to Tech football games, out of town Tech games and bowl games. It wasn´t just Texas Tech, but we golfed together as well. Steve meant a lot to me as was a very, very good friend.

When I moved to Lubbock, Steve came to see me to go to Tech football games. I just really can´t say enough of the impact Steve had on my life.

When Steve told me he had cancer in 2017, I was concerned about him, but he had a positive attitude. That was because of his faith in Christ. He was telling me about his trips to MD Anderson. He would tell me about some of the people there because Steve was the kind of person that wanted to show others that he was interested in getting to know them. Steve liked people and never met a stranger. That part of West Texas never left him.

There is so much that I could say about Steve, but I will say that the world is a little dimmer now. I will miss him and our conversations in the fall about the prospects of Texas Tech football. Having said that, I know that our separation is temporary because there is no doubt of Steve´s trust and faith in Jesus Christ and right now, he is seeing what we can only imagine.
