Steven King Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from May 29 to Jun. 1, 2023.
Steven B. King, 66, of Kissimmee, Florida, passed away on May 12, 2023.

Steve was born on Jan 9,1957, to Theodore (Ted) and Joan King in Littleton, NH. His family relocated to Hot Springs, AR when Steve was five years old. He attended Lakeside High School in Hot Springs where he was a star student and athlete. Upon graduating from Lakeside HS in 1975, Steve was selected to attend the U.S. Air Force Academy (USAFA) in Colorado Springs, CO. where he was a member of the USAFA water polo team.

Steve was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant with the USAFA graduating class of 1979. Steve became an Air Force pilot and retired after 27 years as a Colonel. During that time, he served in varying positions in the Air Force across the United States, Europe, Philippines and Afghanistan. He was a command pilot with more than 3,900 hours flying helicopters (HH-53E), tactical airlift (C-130E) and tanker aircraft (C-141). Following his Air Force retirement in 2006, he worked for Booz Allen Hamilton until his second retirement in 2016.

Steve is survived by his wife Arlene (Col, US Army, retired) whom he met when they served at the U.S. Transportation Command at Scott Air Force Base, Illinois. Steve and Arlene were married for more than 20 years, blending their families when they got married in 2002. He is also survived by his stepson Darryl Beatty (Mary Ellen), his daughter, Sara King, his son, Adam King (Emily), his grandchildren, Declan and Amelia Beatty, his mother Joan King and many loving siblings, nieces, and nephews. Steve was predeceased by his father, Theodore King.

Steve was an avid athlete. Basketball, swimming, and cycling were his passions. An ardent cyclist, Steve bicycled twice across the U.S. and down the Pacific Coast with America By Bicycle. He also swam the Maui Channel Swim, an open water relay, and participated in the Hawaii marathon and several triathlons throughout the years. He and Arlene pedaled their tandem bike six times in the Hotter 'N Hell Hundred event in Wichita Falls, TX. In retirement, Steve spent his time playing with his grandchildren and cycling, swimming, and participating in community events. Always willing to give back even after his 2017 injury, he established SolAbility, a group for those with disabilities, in his retirement community, Solivita.

Services will be held at St Rose of Lima Catholic Church, 3880 Pleasant Hill Rd, Kissimmee, FL on June 14 at 12:00 noon. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Christian Activity Center in East St Louis, Illinois (540 N. 6th Street, East St. Louis, IL 62202) the organization Steve was cycling to raise money for during his last cross country bike ride in 2017. Donations may also be made to St. Rose of Lima in Kissimmee.

Pardon me if this is late, but I just learned of Steve´s passing from the latest issue of the Air Force Academy Association of Graduates "Checkpoints" magazine. I was one year behind Steve at the Academy, spending my Fourth Class (freshman) year in Cadet Squadron 21 "Blackjacks" where he was a Third Classman (sophomore). For those of you unfamiliar with the Academy experience, the Fourth Class year ends with one final bout of rigorous training known as "Hell Week" (although at that time it really only lasted about three and a half days). During Hell Week, one Third Classman was assigned to each Fourth Classman to, shall we say, "mentor" them through the experience. Steve was my "mentor". At the end of Hell Week, the Steve pinned the Prop and Wings insignia on my dress uniform, signifying my recognition as a full-fledged member of the Cadet Wing. Receiving my Prop and Wings from Steve was one of the proudest moments of my life.

Although we never crossed paths during our Air Force careers, I will always remember Steve as a tremendous leader and positive influence on my life. May he rest in peace.

So sad. I knew Steve as we were members of the same cadet squadron at the US Air Force Academy although I was in the class a year behind his. He was such a kind and caring individual and leader and a great role model. RIP, Steve.

So sorry to hear of Steves passing. The world could certainly use more like him. Even through Gary's dementia fog he recognized Steve's picture and said "that's Steve, he's a good guy". He's left lasting impressions on all he's met. Thank you Arlene and family for the loving care and support you provided Steve these last years. We'll be praying for your peace and strength in the coming days.

I had the honor of knowing and working with Steve both in the AF and as a coworker at Booz Allen. He´s one of those people that come along once in a lifetime and the impact he had on me will last a lifetime. We shared a love of biking and I competed against Steve in several triathlons and he always had a big smile and hug for me when I finished long after he crossed the finish line! He coached me in swimming and would occasionally slow down on the bike so I could draft on his rear wheel! But what I remember most about Steve was his enthusiasm for life and always striving to achieve his next goal. His is a great patriot and we miss him so much- rest in peace my dear friend.

Steve was a friend, mentor, inspiration, and coworker; I´ll miss hearing his humble, positive attitude and funny stories of family, career, and outdoor activities. I had the privilege of working with Steve for several years, then taking his job after he retired so he could be a full time grandpa, cyclist, swimmer, and golfer. After the accident, Steve was even more of an inspiration with his incredibly positive attitude; something from which we can all learn. All of us that knew Steve know how much he loved his family and how giving he was to so many others outside of his family. Blessings and prayers of comfort and peace to Arlene, Adam, Sara, Darryl, Declan, Amelia, and the rest of the family. While he may not physically be with you, Steve will always be in your hearts. You can take comfort in knowing he is now healed and I´m sure he´s cycling, swimming, and golfing on top of the clouds as he watches over you.

I, as I am sure many others, will miss Steve. I met Steve on our cross-country bike ride in 2006. We had a couple of occasions since then to see him and Arlene. Then after his accident, Cathy and I visited him at the VA hospital in Tampa. During that visit and subsequent phone calls throughout the years, he was always inspiring. I was uplifted by his spirit, the love for his family, his faith in Jesus and his ability to accept his physical limitations. His was one of my heroes. I will miss him.

I had the honor and priveledge of working with Steve for 7 short years. I've never met a more humble, and inspirational man. Steve always had a kind word for everyone he met and never once failed to make you feel like you were special. He always deflected any spotlight back to you and your family. His only comments that centered on himself was that he was more blessed that anyone. I'm proud to have called him friend and to have shared the same uniform as him. He inspires me daily to be a kinder, more loving man and I hope to honor his memory by living up to his example.

Even though my husband and I never met Steve, we have heard many stories of his determination, positive attitude and inspiration from his good friends in the SolAbility Club in Solivita. We admired his perseverance, determination and positive attitude which has been an inspiration to all. He had a life well lived and will be missed by all who knew him.
