Dear Leone family,
I was scrolling through Facebook today when I saw a picture that someone (whom I don't know) had posted to express their grief over the passing of their friend. I was shocked to recognize the person in the picture: Steven.
I never knew Steven. I didn't even know his name until I read this Facebook post--I only knew his face. I met Steven once at a URI event and spoke with him for just a few minutes. This was during a really awful time of my life, and I didn't have many friends at school, but this person (whose name I now know is Steven), was so friendly, so kind, so warm and welcoming--and he put me right at ease. He felt like a friend even though he wasn't--and I really needed that at the time.
Months later, I was walking around campus, feeling really depressed, and I saw in the crowd this familiar face that I had seen at a URI event weeks ago. I didn't know his name, and he didn't know me, but when I saw him, I remembered how nice this person had been. I remembered that, even though I was feeling awful and totally alone, that there are truly kind people out there. I know that in your time of sadness, my story probably seems trivial at best and disrespectful at worst, but I want to honestly express that just by being a friendly, familiar face in the crowd, Steven really made a difference to me. It may seem ridiculous, but in sad periods of one's life like that, those little moments, those little sparks of hope and rejuvenation, can restore your faith in humanity. They can make you feel less alone. And Steven did that for me.
I am so sorry for your loss. I am a total stranger, but Steven, without even knowing it, had managed to help me out and make me feel better when no one else did. I am so sincerely sorry to hear of his passing. He must have been a truly wonderful person, and I wish I could have had the chance to have known.
My deepest condolences.
Alex

I met Steven in a library by accident 2 years ago at URI and it was one of those wonderful occasions that will stick with me forever. Though I do not know him well, he had such an uplifting spirit and was one of the most caring and passionate individuals that I have had the pleasure of meeting. He knew how to turn sad days into bright ones again, and I will always be grateful for getting a glimpse into the wonderful way he viewed the world.

Dear Leone Family-
I never had the pleasure of meeting Steven but I can tell from reading the condolence messages that he was a remarkable young man who was a blessing to everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him. The world is a better place because he was here. Sincerest heartfelt condolences to his family and all those who knew and loved him.

Dear Steve, Anita and Family:
We are so very sorry to hear of Steven's passing. It is so unbelievable to have to accept such horrible news. We knew Steven only from our time at St. Joseph's School. He was such an amazing kid and his wonderful nature radiated all the way from his heart to his gorgeous megawatt smile. From his posts, we could see that he grew up to be a wonderful young man with a self-assured personality and a desire to showcase others achievements and support the environment (all great causes and ambitions). Be proud of him and yourselves for the rest of your own lives. Our hearts go out to you during this difficult time. Christina Martabano and Brendan Liberati
