Steven Newhouse Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 14, 2025.
Steven Harold Newhouse, a man of boundless curiosity and diverse talents, died of heart failure and complications with Pulmonary Fibrosis on January 13, 2025, in Charlotte, North Carolina. just days shy of his 80th birthday. Born and raised in Benton Harbor, Michigan on January 16, 1945, Steve was predeceased by his parents Harold Walter Newhouse and Mary Louise Newhouse, and his brother, Walter Frederick(Rick) Newhouse.

Steve graduated from Western Michigan University in 1967 and earned his MBA in 1968. He went on to serve his country with distinction in the United States Army from 1969 to 1971 as Adjutant and Personnel Officer of an Air Defense Artillery Battalion stationed in Stuttgart, Germany.

Steve's career of 43 years as a dedicated Human Resources professional was very important to him. He began his career with General Foods Corporation in 1971 and went on to make an impact at many different companies across the country. Notably, he spent 20 years with Watkins Motor Lines in Lakeland, Florida, where he was instrumental in facilitating the transition to FedEx National LTL. He retired in 2012 from the FedEx Freight Corporation.

Upon retirement, Steve and his wife Cheryl moved to Boone, NC where he was able to focus on his many hobbies. In 2016 he returned to the workforce as a professor at Appalachian State University, where he passed along his knowledge and zest for life to future generations.

A true Renaissance man, Steve pursued a wide array of interests throughout his life. A proud Eagle Scout and member of The Order of the Arrow, he was also an accomplished artist who worked with watercolor, colored pencil, and Zentangle techniques, earning first place at the Union County Senior Games. As an amateur magician, he delighted children with his performances. He was also an avid scuba diver, fly fisherman, and camper who cherished time outdoors with his family. A lifelong lover of music, Steve played harmonica and dabbled in ukulele.

Steve's passion for bourbon and barbecue led him to become a Master Certified Barbecue Judge for the Kansas City Barbecue Association and later a competitor on BBQ cook teams. He also volunteered with Operation Barbecue Relief, serving meals to victims of natural disasters across several states, and was a founding member of the Boone Bourbon Club.

Professionally, Steve authored *And You Call This F-ing Leadership* and served on numerous boards, including the Watercolor Society of North Carolina and the United Way of Central Florida. He was also a dedicated volunteer for Meals on Wheels in Boone, NC.

Steve is survived by his beloved wife, Cheryl Newhouse; his son Grant Newhouse and daughter-in-law Jamie Newhouse; his granddaughter Georgia Rose Newhouse; and his daughter Rebecca Newhouse Podorsky and son-in-law Miroslav Podorsky.

Per Steve's wishes, there will be no public service and he asks instead that all who love him please lift a glass in memory of him. He requested to be cremated and have his ashes scattered in the Gulf of Mexico so that he can forever watch his favorite sunset. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to Operation Barbecue Relief in his name, so that he can continue to support the efforts of the organization he loved so dearly. He was legendary for never meeting a stranger and always being quick with a joke. Even in his final days, he swiftly endeared himself to the medical staff working with him, and even managed to sell a few of his books. He never failed to bring a smile to the faces of those around him, and his outgoing personality has left a lasting impression on each and every person he came into contact with. His family will remember him fondly driving his red Miata convertible while blasting Chuck Berry with a smile. May his memory bring comfort and joy to all who knew him.

That laugh! His enormous enjoyment of life. His professionalism. These are what I will remember.

I met Steve around 1980 when he was the Orlando HR manager for Eckerd Drugs and I was a terrified newbie corporate lawyer handling my first EEOC hearing (actually, hearing of any kind for that company). Steve was the star witness; well-prepared; charts in hand. The facts were in our favor, but the hearing officer was on what lawyers call a fishing expedition. We stalwartly refused to take the bait. I was impressed with him from the start because of his professionalism and seriousness. I am certain to this day that he knew how nervous I was and did everything he could to allay my fear. Weeks later we would learn we had won.

What a surprise it was when that serious HR rep took me on a raucous back-of-the-house tour of Disney World in a golf cart that night. Only Steve could make a visit to their laundry facility hysterical!

He was ambitious for sure. When I left to go back to HQ in Clearwater I had in my possession a copy of a manual he had written that he wanted me to give to the General Counsel and VP of Personnel. I followed through and eventually he transferred to HQ where he met and married my friend, Cheryl, and we all became friends.

What a blessing it is to have known Steve.

I met Steve & Cheryl & the family in 2019 while we were neighbors in The Villages, Florida! I also worked along side him in Parks & Recreation for a couple years while the family was in Florida! I will always be forever greatful to Steve for showing me the ropes in our quest to help Villagers explore their interests and to "LIVE THEIR BEST LIFE." After working a long hard weekend, I would wake up to his "Motivational Monday" email to get my week started off right! In our down time we talked about everything under the sun and I will never forget the time we spent solving the problems of the world! I learned a lot from Steve about Bourbon & BBQ by tipping an occasional glass with him, and following his volunteer work with various BBQ organizations. I have read Steve´s book and it is spot on accurate and we shared tons of laughs at our RA jobs in The Villages! One does not easily forget his sense of humor as you see there was always a funny lesson in everything we did!
My sincere condolences to you Cheryl, and your entire family! Steve would want you all to smile & remember how he made you feel! May he rest in peace!

I have very fond memories. Back in 1998, Steve took my terminally ill husband. I´m joyrides in that red convertible. My husband always came home with a big smile in his face and adventure in his heart. It was such a generous and kind action. And Steve´s laugh - who can forget that distinctively joyful laugh.
Cheryl - my thoughts and love are with you and your family. Hugs and prayers to you all.

Heartbroken to hear this news. Steve was always so full of life, so engaging, and with such infectious laughter. Hard to believe that he can be gone. Seeing all the Newhouses in Prague in 2017 was so fun. I know I took a photo that became your Christmas card but I can´t find it! I will cherish those memories. Cheryl, Becca, and Grant, my heart goes out to you. The life of the party will definitely be missed

I only met Mr. Newhouse once in the hospital in December and in the brief interaction I had with him was he was absolute delight. He was is great spirits. Although we only conversed briefly he was so pleasant and funny. I left the room in a better mode than I entered it, his jovial spirit radiated off him, such a special soul. My prays and thoughts go out to Grant and the Newhouse family.

Steve and I met our freshman at Western Michigan University. In my junior and senior year we roomed next to each other in Hoejke Hall. Those were great times, and we had so much fun (some of the fun I cannot repeat here). We both enrolled in Army ROTC and commissioned as Second Lieutenants. I entered active duty in 1968 and New (we ended addressing ourselves as New and Lu), bless his heart enrolled in the MBA program at Western. Of course, I ended up in Vietnam and poor New ended up in Germany. He always knew how to land on his feet so to speak. We kept in touch over the years mostly by phone ( no internet or email at that time, although we did have push button land line phones) and sometimes in person as our schedules and geography permitted. The last time I we got together was June 2, 2023 for lunch. We joked and laughed ourselves silly (picture attached). There was a bar on campus called the Knollwood Tavwrn which inhabited frequently. New had collected coasters from Knollwood and gave me one during our lunch. I bought the Knollwood tee shirt and held up the coaster for a selfie and sent to New. I will miss him dearly. He was one of my best friends.

Steve and I went to Magic in Chicago to get some new illusions for his next show. The store was owned by Jay Marshal the Dean of American Magicians in years past. By the time we left Steve was best buddies with Mr. Marshall and his friends. We were given a tour of his storage basement. Only Steve could walk in to a store owned by a renowned magician and walk out as a friend. If you knew Steve you would know that this was not uncommon. Loved him like a brother.

What a life well lived. I like many others knew Steve from work and I had heard of his many interests but until I read his obituary I had no idea how diverse they were.
We should all strive to take advantage of our short lives as much as Steve obviously did.
RIP sir

Steve has been an incredible friend, mentor, big brother, and inspiration. Now, we honor his transition. No other person could make me laugh so deeply, even when we were in the midst of a serious conversation about the human condition and our many frailties. I will love and miss him forever. My heart is with Cheryl, Becca, Grant and Steve's entire family and his extensive family of friends. If we are measured by those who honor and miss us when we are gone, then Steve is a giant among humans. Smooth transition, very dear friend. The photo is from our amazing time in Bar Harbor, ME in 2012 when we consumed lobstah at every single meal as true rusticators do!

To Cheryl, Rebecca, and Grant & Jamie. As you all know your husband/dad/father-in-law was always the life of the party. He was deeply missed after the move to Florida by all of us in Boone, especially his bourbon brothers.

Many of us were fortunate enough to see him again this past summer at the Bourbon Boil and he didn't miss a beat.

Among the many hundreds of his adoring fans, I am blessed for having Steve as a friend. I could go on and on...

This month's bourbon club is on Steve's Birthday. Per his wishes, we will joyfully lift a glass (several) in his honor and memory. There will be nothing politically correct about our toasts to Steve :-) and we all know he wouldn't want it any other way.
